Local restaurants

A simple yet satisfying restaurant for Thai-influenced Malay dishes, Wan Thai (+60 (0)49 661 214), at 80-82 Langkawi Mall in Kuah town is extremely casual and popular with foreign visitors. Mare Blu (+60 (0)49 593 830), on Perdana Quay in Telaga Harbour Park, is a delightful Italian restaurant with harbourside views and an excellent wine list; dine at one of the outdoor, waterfront tables.

Local cafés

Owned by Malaysia’s former prime minister, the Loaf (+60 (0)49 594 866), along Perdana Quay at Lot C9, is a bakery and bistro, which serves 60 varieties of bread, moreish snacks and light meals; call ahead – the opening hours can be erratic.

Diary

January A high point of island social life, the annual Royal Langkawi International Regatta draws in sailors from all over the world (www.langkawiregatta.com). February Traditional Hindu holiday Thaipusam sees devotees piercing their bodies with skewers and hooks. March Le Tour de Langkawi is one of the best bicycle races in Asia and a hoot to watch (www.tdl.com.my). October The Hindu festival of lights, Deepavali, is a glittering visual treat. When the island’s Muslims celebrate Hari Raya Puasa at the end of the fasting month, markets sprout up across Malaysia, selling festive clothes, foodstuffs and knick-knackery.
