Redondo (+351 254 732 432) at nearby Romaneira serves cuisine has flavours from Paris and Porto, thanks to chefs that bring with them their own native specialities. In Régua, Douro In (+351 254 323 951) combines the region’s most exquisite wines with a well-priced menu of local delicacies, and has a popular bar upstairs too. Castos e Pratos (+351 254 323 290) in Régua has a rustic wood-beamed restaurant upstairs with a wine bar serving tasty tapas beneath.
Worth getting out of bed for
Don’t worry about being stuck for something to do – the hotel’s own activity list spans 30 pages. Aquapura offers tours of wine tastings, cookery classes, and private riverboat trips. Ask the hotel to arrange a tour of the local quintas – there are more than a hundred to visit. Quinta da Pacheca is run by the Aquapura farmhouse’s former owners. If you’re around at harvest time (late September), you can help out by stomping the grapes in the traditional fashion. Most quintas are open daily between March and October, and Wednesday to Sunday in the winter months.
