Gigi’s of Beechworth
Original owner Luigi ‘Gigi’ Cipolato built the reputation of this smart but not-too-formal restaurant and new(er) owner Allan Parker has ensured the standard has remained high. There are plenty of Italian influences on the menu, but there’s also a swing towards French flavours and techniques. You’ll also find a healthy list of local suppliers championed, and an inspiring choice of wines from the area.

Provenance
The dining room is the front of the old Bank of Australasia, the cellar is located in the vault and the stables out the back have four luxury suites: this is Provenance, the latest offering from acclaimed chef Michael Ryan and his wife, winemaker Jeanette Henderson. Ryan takes the freshest seasonal produce and uses contemporary methods to produce sensational dishes loaded with taste and texture. The restaurant has a chef’s hat (the Aussie equivalent of a Michelin star) and was awarded Best New Country Restaurant by The Age Good Food Guide 2010.

Wardens Food and Wine
Rocco Esposito, the wine lover who turned this establishment into the winner it is, may have left the building but things carry on as before with chef Douglas Elder still behind the stove under new owners Amanda and Mark Petts. Expect seasonal Italian fare and a sussed selection of wine from local vineyards and much farther afield in this restored pub with exposed brick walls, industrial light fittings and open fireplaces. In the morning, competition is fierce for the outdoor tables where locals and cyclists stop for coffee.

Beechworth Bakery
It’s famous around these parts and sells an enormous variety of freshly baked bread, delicious cakes and pastries. Try the super-sized lamingtons, a peculiarly Australian concoction of vanilla sponge sandwiched with raspberry jam and covered with chocolate icing and coconut.

Beechworth Provender
If you eat in, there are only a few items on the daily-changing menu, but arguably the best coffee in town. If you want to buy local wines, produce from Victoria's north east (olive oil, cheese, chutneys and antipasto delicacies) or a hamper stuffed with all of the above, this is your one-stop shop.

Bridge Road Brewers
Located in the town’s 150-year-old coach house and stables, Ben Kraus’ boutique brewery is a top spot to pull up a chair in the sunny garden (or by the fire in winter), taste a few handcrafted beers and sample the palette-pleasing pretzels and wood-fired pizzas.
