Bybrook
This terrific Michelin-starred restaurant sources its food from a variety of local, organic suppliers. Choose from a range of tempting à la carte creations, or enjoy a superior Sunday lunch. The romantic dining hall has views out across landscaped and beautifully tended gardens and woods. The Full Glass Bar doffs its trilby to a more elegant age, serving nibbles, whiskies, cognacs and Armagnacs in low-lit oak, glass and chrome speakeasy style.
Manor House Hotel, Castle Combe, Chippenham, Wiltshire, SN14 7HR

Gascoyne Place
This Grade II-listed Georgian building has a traditional restaurant upstairs, and two bars downstairs. There are fine pre-theatre and à la carte menus featuring good solid steaks and fish.

Old Bell
Next to Malmesbury Abbey, this beautiful ivy-clad 13th century house is reputed to be England’s oldest purpose-built hotel. The restaurant offers a regional, seasonal and contemporary take on some traditional gems – Balmoral venison, and rabbit and ham hock terrine among them. Chef Tom Rains also serves a nine-course tasting menu. The brasserie provides a slightly less formal bistro menu and the inevitable English afternoon tea.

Park Restaurant
A sophisticated Michelin-starred affair with a smart evening dress code. This is a restaurant for serious diners, who like their food laced with liqueurs and garnished with truffle shavings. Even the relatively informal brasserie has pheasant and wild boar on the menu.

Squires Restaurant
You could potentially graze your way through the day here. Squires serves the full English, carvery lunches and an à la carte menu in the evenings. It’s also an extremely convenient pit-stop when exploring Salisbury. Charles Dickens and Mark Twain must have thought so too as both supped here. Try to get a table by the window, with a view of the enclosed courtyards.

The Bell at Ramsbury
Serves English classics and good grills. Try the Wiltshire venison shepherds’ pie or the fish and chips with Ramsbury Bitter-battered haddock. The pub has an informal atmosphere with pictures of country pursuits adorning every wall. The bar also stocks a selection of local real ales.

The Haunch of Venison
This curious old Salisbury pub has anecdotes aplenty. It was allegedly a 14th-century brothel, it’s haunted by two poltergeists (the mummified hand of one of them is showcased upstairs), and an upper room was used by Churchill and Eisenhower during the planning of the D- Day landings. The restaurant offers a variety of gastropub staples and the bar has a tremendous selection of malt whiskies, brandies and real ales.

The Orangery
A wisteria-decked, award-winning restaurant, serving modern European cuisine in a pair of elegant, candle-lit and pastel-shaded English dining rooms.

The Pear Tree Inn
Housed in a gorgeous little Cotswold stone cottage, this celebrated establishment serves award-winning gastropub grub, with lots of locally grown veg and organic free-range meats. In summer, you can sit out and enjoy the lovely exterior from a table in its handsome garden.

The Rectory Kitchen & Cellar
This is a foodie’s paradise, with fresh, delicious home cooking to either eat in a sweet mews setting, or to take away. Squirrel away some freshly baked biscuits for the car journey home, or a jar of Rectory lemon curd as a souvenir.
Crudwell, Malmsbury, SN16 9EP
