Crystal Jade Palace

The Crystal Jade chain produces consistent, spot-on Chinese food and dim sum, with each outlet concentrating on a particular regional cuisine. This branch on Level 4 of the Takashimaya Shopping Centre is a Smith favourite for its specialty Cantonese cuisine. We also like Crystal Jade Jiang Nan Cuisine on Level 2, where you can sample flavours from south of the Yangtze river.

391 Orchard Road, 4–19 Ngee Ann City (Takashimaya Shopping Centre), Singapore 238872

Iggy’s

Widely acknowledged as one of the world’s best restaurants, Iggy’s offers a set 10-course tasting menu – you don’t get a choice, but you won’t be disappointed with the innovative fusion food. In 2010, the restaurant moved from its original location to this space, with twice the area. Mind, there are no more seats – just more room for the kitchen and the amazing chefs to weave their magic. Settle in for a lingering gourmet feast.

The Regent Singapore, 1 Cuscaden Road, Singapore 249715

Imperial Herbal Restaurant

Here, they cook to cure you, adding prescribed Chinese herbal remedies to your meal. After a brief diagnostic chat at the pharmacy-style counter, the chef will design a soup or other witch’s brew to treat your particular ailment, be it jet-lag or sluggish digestion. Careful, though – you could be prescribed locust tonic, fried ants or scorpion soup.

IndoChine Waterfront

Head to this opulently decorated Oriental restaurant and bar on the site of the Asian Civilisations Museum for healthy Southeast Asian cuisine. Dishes hail from Vietnam, Laos and Cambodia, and there's a nice view of the Singapore River and skyscrapers to boot. Order a two-person bowl of canh chua do bien, a sweet and sour Vietnamese seafood soup, and Cambodian-style chilli and basil chicken, then head next door progress to Bar Opiume for a cocktail.

One-Ninety

The Sunday buffet brunch at this Four Seasons outpost is a Singaporean institution. Book ahead for the most wantonly decadent display of food you've ever seen, and bring a cavernously empty stomach.

Oso Ristorante

Chef Diego Chiarini’s cooking dazzles. His trattoria flies in fresh cheeses from Italy for its dedicated cheese room, has a permanent buzz and informed service. The rigatoni with thyme, black olives and rabbit is to die for, as is the marsala-laced zabaglione.

46 Bukit Pasoh Road, Singapore 089858

Shunjuu

For Japanese sumiyaki (charcoal-grilled food), including great yakitori, try this traditional izakaya restaurant (or ‘sit-in sake shop’), which handily has one of the widest selections of sake in town. Sit at the counter overlooking the open kitchen and try skewered ox tongue, and the cheese or scallop maki rolls.

StraitsKitchen

Want a taste of hawker street-snack classics without having to pound the pavements? Book a table at this buffet-style restaurant for Singaporean breakfast, lunch or dinner, and sample local staples like Llaksa, grilled stingray, chicken rice, fluffy naans, kebabs and nasi Ggoreng.

The Prime Society

Set in a former colonial barracks building, this unabashed temple to all things meaty serves some of the most succulent steaks in the city, with deliciously zingy Bloody Marys to wash them down.

Tippling Club

Aussie chef Ryan Clift channels Ferran Adria to create an inventive meal that keeps you entertained right to the very end. It’s fun and clever, but what will keep you toasting till late is consultant bartender Matthew Bax’s equally imaginative cocktail list that includes an Velvet Fog, a smooth, violet-hued mix of gin, Creme de Violette, champagne and citrus liqueur.

True Blue

Benjamin Seck and his pint-sized mother Daisy cook brilliantly flavoured Peranakan dishes, blending Chinese and Malay flavours with aplomb. The minced pork ball soup and chicken with buah keluak (a kind of nut) are delightful. Local Peranakans will sniff and claim their great-grand aunt makes better fare, but you can’t please everyone.

Waku Ghin

It’s the Tetsuya treatment brought to Singapore. No expense has been spared in the design of the Sydney chef’s first overseas outpost, where just 50 diners, split across two sittings, have the privilege of devouring the 10-course tasting menu each night. Here, the emphasis is much more strongly Japanese, and it doesn’t come cheap (about S$400 per person). But you’ll never forget the experience, particularly if you finish the evening with a drink in the drawing room with its stunning views of the Singapore skyline.

Hacienda

This perennial favourite is an intimate outdoor venue that sprawls across clipped lawns. The grown-up vibe extends to regular DJ nights where there are live performances by an interesting mix of acts.

Loof

A breezy split-level rooftop bar opposite Raffles, Loof’s strippeed- back decor is teamed with sensible banquette seating, good cocktails, great views and a good-looking clientele. Best of all, when it rains, they pour – if the heavens open before 9pm, drinks are two for the price of one. Playful atmosphere plus atmospheric playlist equals good times.

Odeon Towers Extension Rooftop, 331 North Bridge Road, Singapore 188720

Orgo Bar & Lab

Not many people know about this place, so it’s best to keep its address close to your chest. There are two major pluses going for Orgo; the first is its lovely view of Marina Bay and the city skyline; the second is its list of inventive cocktails prepared by the resident Japanese mixologist.

PS Café

Less trad café and more modern all-day grazing post, this Scandinavian-style resto-bar overlooking lush lawns is a fantastic spot for brunch or a quick coffee in the morning (the view is beautiful at this time of day). It’s also good for afternoon tea, a pre-dinner cocktail or romantic dinner. Booking, whether for lunch or dinner, is essential. Don’t forget to check out the antiques and furniture shops in the neighbourhood while you're there.

TWG Tea Salon

Amid the skyscrapers of Raffles Place, it’s not particularly easy to find TWG, but it’s worth the legwork. This cosy nook, filled with light streaming in through the high windows, is a haven of delicate French pastries and exotic teas like rare yellow buds from Sichuan and Ceylonese black tea. If you prefer blends, sip infusions of roses from Grasse, mint from Meknes and bergamot from Sicily.
