Bumbu Bali
Ironically, the best Balinese food on the island is cooked by a Swiss-born chef who is undoubtedly Bali’s favourite adopted son. Heinz von Holzen’s authentic menu has inspired several cookbooks.
Jalan Pratama, Tanjung Benoa, Bali 80363
(+62 (0)361 708848)
Di Mare
Marvellous Mediterranean meals are to be had at this beautifully decorated eaterie attached to the Karma Jimbaran resort. New York chef Raymond Saja is renowned throughout the region and writes a fortnightly column for the Bali Advertiser.
Jalan Bukkit Permai, Jimbaran Bay, Bali 80362

Kafe Warisan
Bali’s bastion of classical French food serves exquisite Mediterranean cuisine with characteristic Parisian sophistication. Don’t miss the signature dish of seared foie gras.
Jalan Kerobokan 38, Seminyak,Bali 80361

Ku Dé Ta’s
This heaving beach scene is admittedly as much a club for the cool kids as a posers’ paradise, but the beachfront babe also serves up seriously good grub like seared baby lobster and wagyu short ribs in bordelaise sauce. Forget about your bikini as the double Valhrona chocolate tart with gold leaf and cinnamon ice cream arrives.
Jalan Kayu Aya 9, Seminyak, Bali 80361

Ma Joly
The tranquil beach setting is hard to beat. Get as close to the water as you can, and sit back to savour the southern French cooking.
Jalan Wana Segara, Tuban, Kuta, Bali 80361

Mozaic
Nobody knows in advance what they’ll be eating at this modern restaurant set in the jungle where French techniques are applied to local flavours. Rest assured, however, that nobody ever comes away disappointed. Chef Chris Salans’ four six-course tasting menus are an ever-changing revelation and the wine list is similarly inspired.
Jalan Raya Sanggingan, Ubud, Bali 80571

Double Six
This perennially pumping poolside lotus pad gets progressively wilder as the hours pass thanks to trippy house music that pumps up the scantily clad crowd into the wee hours.
Jalan Double 6, Seminyak, Bali 80361
(+62 (0)361 736 443)
Hu’u
Ideal for hanging out under the stars sipping lychee martinis, this twin-set of pavilion bars draws a crowd of lounge lizards, urban nomads and cocktail connoisseurs.
Jalan Petitenget, Seminyak, Bali 80361
(+62 (0)361 702222)
The Martini Club
With more than 50 martinis on offer, the Ritz Carlton’s stylish bar overlooking the Indian Ocean is ideal for pre-dinner drinks with an injection of class.
Jalan Karang Mas Sejahtera, Jimbaran, Bali 80364
Cafés

Made’s Warung II
Trendier than its older sister in Kuta, this café is nevertheless an icon for excellent home-style cooking. One of its signature dishes is nasi campur, an Indonesian meal of rice topped with vegetables, chicken, beef, tofu and chilli sauce. It also serves up international fare such as sashimi, tom yum soup, pasta and steak.
Jalan Raya Seminyak, Seminyak, Bali 80361

Naughty Nuri’s Warung
It may be a bit rough around the edges, but don’t let that put you off – this is the best barbecue in town. Residents and visitors (chef Anthony Bourdain is said to be a fan of the martinis) converge here for homey, cheap and cheerful fare, such as hearty pork ribs.
Jalan Raya Sanggingan, Ubud, Bali 80571
(+62 (0)361 733277)
Wild Ginger
Great for both Modern Asian cuisine and quality people watching, this café boasts accomplished French-trained chefs and an extremely good value five-course sampling menu.
Jalan Laksmana 999, Seminyak, Bali 80361
