Àuge

Adelaide’s top tables are behind discreet dark windows and a heavy copper-faced door, spiriting you away from Grote Street’s hectic fray and into the playground of head chef Thomas Robinson and sommelier David Scott. The Tuscan tomato stew of Moreton Bay bugs, cockles, local fish, scallops and prawns is a sub-sea sensation! Book way in advance.

Good Life

This shabby-chic organic pizzeria on Adelaide’s hip Hutt Street outdoes itself every time with thin-but-delicious pizzas piled high with fresh, South Australian ingredients. Staff are keen for a laugh but never condescending. Also at Level 1, 42 Jetty Road at the corner of Moseley Street, Glenelg, SA 5045 (+61 (0)8 8376 5900).

Mesa Lunga

The shimmering highlight of the Gouger Street restaurant precinct, magical Mesa Lunga is a moody, nouveau-Med food room backed by a huge wall of wine. The focus is on tapas (white anchovies, aioli and roast capsicum on tostada; blood sausage, fried egg, confit potato and Tabasco) and top-notch thin-crust pizza. Memorable sangria too.

Distill

Sassy Distill has cornered a previously unexplored market niche with its astounding organic, health-biased cocktail list. South Australian wines and cocktail ingredients are creatively wed with bar food sourced from within 100 miles of Adelaide – the 'locavore’ concept played out at a decadent level. A stylish dress code is rigorously edited by the bouncers.

Universal Wine Bar

This hip bar has been around long enough to earn the ‘institution’ tag. Pull up a bentwood chair by the window and thumb through the wine menu, which finishes somewhere beyond 200 Australian and international labels. The nocturnal scene is super-stylish – don’t dress down.

Biga Panificio Bar

Wander down Hutt Street in Adelaide’s East End and you’ll be spoilt for café choice – but Biga, on the corner of Halifax Street, is a cut above the rest. The spread here is genuinely Italian, from the baked eggs with pancetta to big-hearted espresso. Hit the outside tables with the lycra-clad cycling set, peel open a newspaper and settle in for brunch.

Botanic Café

Locals cross town for the Botanic’s tasting menu – two courses and a glass of wine for AU$25 – a steal in anyone’s book. Expect top-flight seasonal South Australian produce cooked with Mediterranean flair, starchy white linen and un-starchy service. The Botanic Gardens are just across the street.

The Store

Stocked with quality produce from across the state, Store serves up a substantial slice of café culture in North Adelaide’s Melbourne Street enclave. The deli is crammed with takeaway delights, or sip a strong coffee while you get through your mountainous breakfast or hefty pasta or risotto.
