Where to find a Mediterranean hideaway for the autumn sun...

We want to find a tranquil haven in the Mediterranean with warm temperatures in early October.  Can you recommend a peaceful hotel by the sea where the weather will be guaranteed?

Santorini is warm, sunny and tranquil in early October.  The beaches will be uncrowded, and you can sample local white wines and Oia's innovative restaurants, go diving beneath the island's volcano, or sail round the Cycladic archipelago in a catamaran.  Less strenuous, but equally reviving, is simply to enjoy the breathtaking, unimpaired vistas over the caldera and the Aegean Sea.  We recommend two secluded, caldera-view hotels.  Astra, which is perched on the cliffside on the north-east coast, offers stylish simplicity.  It is worth stretching to one of its two deluxe suites, each with its own pool for extra privacy, from €600 with bed and breakfast.  At Perivolas, the suite carved into the caves is the ultimate island hideaway, with a hammam, spa and infinity pool.  It costs €1,400 per day for two people, including breakfast.  www.mrandmrssmith.com
