At The Wheatsheaf, a delightful country gastropub and boutique inn, the really big draw is the phenomenal cooking; you'll lurch from meal to glorious meal in a delirium of pastoral astonishment. When you're not eating (these times will be few, so bring an appetite), Bath and Somerset are on your doorstep, providing plenty of pastimes both genteel (Regency architecture, Roman Baths) and adventurous (hiking, hot-air ballooning).

- Everything that emanates from chef Lee Evans’ kitchen at the Wheatsheaf is a pure, unbridled joy. His eclectic menu marries British flavours with French élan. Just reading it will make you drool: dishes include seared scallops with boudin noir.
- Dress code
- Jeans and jumpers all round: comfy clothes are de rigueur – you don't want any tight waistbands or belts hindering your maximum capacity.
- Top table
- Outside, at a scrubbed wooden table on the terrace (which has stunning, soothing rural views); indoors, in the brighter room to the right.
- Last orders
- 11pm. At lunchtime (noon–2.30pm), the à la carte menu is joined by a Garden Menu of grown-up gastropub offerings, including a Ploughman’s to die for, with plank-thick hunks of ham and wedges of tangy cheese, and fresh, home-made breads and rolls.
- Room service
- None, but drinks are still available to residents after the barman has rung last orders.
- Hotel bar
- This stylishly above-par pub has cider, local real ales and beers, plus a substantial cellar of European wines.
