The Gore is in a great location - really convenient for a number of the great restaurants in Knightsbridge and Kensington. We went for lunch at the Boxwood Café (part of the Gordon Ramsay empire) in Knightsbridge, 15 minutes' walk from the Gore. It was excellent – and booking for lunch is much easier and cheaper than going in the evening. Also worth a visit for a quicker bite, and a break from the Knightsbridge shops, is the restaurant on the top floor at Harvey Nichols.
What a wonderful stay we had at The Gore: a delightful room, a cosy bar, great cocktails and incredibly helpful staff. We need not have stepped foot outside but with its close proximity to Hyde Park and the Knightsbridge shops, it was hard not to! We ate at Babylon in Kensington and would thoroughly recommend it – great food, views and an incredibly impressive roof garden; perfect for long summer evenings.
Just five minutes' walk from The Gore we found the delightful Orangery in Kensington Gardens. We sat in the morning sunshine on the terrace looking out onto the beautifully kept gardens enjoying delicious fresh mint tea, freshly pressed apple juice and an excellent coffee. The cakes on offer looked extremely tempting, but we were still full from our scrumptious breakfast at the hotel.
This was our first weekend away as a couple since having our children, now four- and five-years, and was a brilliant combination of decadence and romance. Hotel room was gorgeous. Great mojitos in the hotel bar, then we ate at the Square, in Berkeley Square, and were in heaven with the seven-course tasting menu, with matched wines to each course. (My husband has a fish allergy and they were very happy to provide alternative dishes to any course with fish, and adjusted the wine to one appropriate for the substituted dish – excellent service.) The hotel brunch was perfect for setting us up for a beautiful day walking around Kensington Gardens.
We had a 'Wonderful' three-night stay at the Gore in a 'Wonderful Double' room...
If it's a sunny day, I thoroughly recommend you take a stroll (quite a long stroll) through Hyde Park, along the Serpentine, to Richoux on South Audley Street, Mayfair W1. They serve great brunches and delicious pastries. It's well worth the walk... If the weather's not so good, try the one on Brompton Road, opposite Harrods.
The Gore is the choice for the Proms. Being less than a hundred yards from the Royal Albert Hall, the Gore is the perfect hotel for Prom-goers or indeed any other event at the RAH. It offers a great blend of Edwardian charm and 21st-century know-how. The cooked breakfast is perhaps one of the best I have experienced and as a result I have booked another stay there. So far so good Mr & Mrs Smith, you have some choice hotels adjacent to all the major London concert and theatre venues, can I catch you out somewhere?
We chose to stay at The Gore as the weekend plan was to visit exhibitions at two major London Museums: the Natural History Museum and the Victoria and Albert Museum (the V&A) are both only a 5 minute walk away from The Gore.
I'd highly recommend the restaurant at the V&A. The setting is fantastic and there is a piano player entertaining diners at lunch time. The menu is wide ranging, including deli and sandwich counters, hot meals, cakes and sweets and a licensed bar. Much better value than many other places you would eat in South Kensington and a cultural haven from the usual tourist traps and chain restaurants. Excellent value and great tasting food. We plan to return for a glass of champagne next time we are in the area!
Although not very close to the Gore, it is definitely worth taking the trip to Exmouth Market to go to Moro. This restaurant provides a wonderful slice of Moorish culture and cuisine. The atmosphere and decoration feel like you are transported to hotter and sunnier climes with attention to detail down to the amazing floral floor tiles. Knowledgeable, friendly staff make every effort to help you enjoy the fantastic Spanish/Moroccan-style food (including an almond and lamb broth that was divine in its buttery, creamy nuttiness) and to choose the right wine for each course. And for any sherry lovers this is a delight, particularly the Palo Cortado that I had with my cheese for desert – delicious, smooth and rich.
