- The Ilse-Crawford-overhauled rooms in the main inn building are all pictures of peaceful, pared-down rusticity, with spotless white walls, Welsh wool blankets and rush matting. For a glimpse of the inn’s history, check into Room 12, where there’s a section of hand-painted wall dating back to 1550. We also like Room 5, which has a raised bathroom area up a little stairwell.

- Wellies for countryside trudging; don’t bother with reading matter though, you’ll find a stash of Penguin classics in every room.

Hot on the heels of The Olde Bell, Ilse Crawford has brought her designer’s eye to the warm and woody interiors of The Crown Inn in Amersham, a Buckinghamshire bolthole that blends 500 years of history with a fresh modern feel.

- Hotel restaurant
- Kitchen revolutionary Rosie Sykes oversees the Crown’s menu of fine farmhouse food, including home-baked bread, jugged kippers, and the best beef and ale pie in the business. As well as the slightly more formal dining room, bar meals are available in the snug, pubby area at the back.

- Hiking socks and waterproofs (damp dogs discouraged).
- Top table
- In the summer, grab a table in the cobbled courtyard; in winter, cosy up by the fire.
- Last orders
- Breakfast’s served until 9.30am, lunch from 12.30pm to 3pm, and dinner from 6pm until 10pm. Drinks are served until 11pm.

- Hot and cold snacks are available 24 hours a day.
- Hotel bar
- Mismatched chairs, chunky tables and coarse woolly blankets dominate the bar at the heart of the Crown. It’s a place to quaff a pint of locally brewed ale while nibbling from a bowl of spicy nuts and soothing ramble-weary limbs in front of the log fire.
