Hurst House is not a place you want to venture out of very often, except perhaps for a long walk along the coast. However, we found a very friendly pub in Laugharne called the New Three Mariners.
We had a wonderful day taking in just a few of the ruined castles dotted along the valley from Laugharne up to Llandeilo, taking in Llansteffan, Dryslwyn, Dinefwr, you come across one every few miles. There are fabulous views from these atmospheric eyries and it's a great way to walk off some of the delicious Hurst House cuisine. When you're done castling Llandeilo has lots of great independent shops and eateries in which to while away the rest of the day.
Great stay, great location – word of warning though: we went to have a drink in Brown's Hotel, Laugharne, Dylan Thomas' local... but it was closed, faded and unloved.
The tip of eating at the Corrs Restaurant & Gardens (+44 (0)1994 427219) cannot be recommended enough - the food is fantastic as you'd expect, but the atmosphere and personal style of the service makes the place. One point to note - they don't accept credit cards, so take your cheque book. As for Hurst House - simply superb. The service provided by the staff was probably the best I've ever experienced. Something added recently is the fact you can borrow a couple of bicycles and helmets - we did this and had a lovely cycle to Pendle Sands and back.
