The Hotel du Vin group's smallest outpost, with only 24 bedrooms, this property is also the original Hotel du Vin. England’s ancient capital, a cathedral city on the edge of the South Downs, is only a hour from London, and this Georgian hideaway is the only one of its kind for miles. The Bistro and Champagne Bar are the jewel in Winchester's eating-and-drinking crown, and it's a family-friendly hotel.

Rates: £135–£225, not including breakfast.
Check-out: 11am, but flexible by arrangement.

Food & drink

Hotel restaurant: The cosy bistro serves modern Mediterranean and French cuisine. Last orders: for lunch 13.45h; dinner 21.45. Terrace in the summer for lunch.
Dress code: Relaxed, even outdoorsy.
Top table: Table 8 in the corner overlooking the garden, or on the terrace for lunch in summer.
Last orders: Last orders for dinner at 9.45pm. The bar is open 24 hours for residents.
