Goring is pretty handy for a visit to Le Manoir Aux Quat'Saisons, we had a lunch booking at Le Manoir and it was only 20 minutes away by taxi. Lunch was excellent, and visiting Le Manoir during the day gives you the opportunity to take a tour around the extensive gardens. On our second evening at The Miller the hotel restaurant was a bit swamped and they stopped doing bar meals. Without much expectation (at 10pm on a Wednesday night) we nipped out to try and find somewhere to eat, and found the Chef King Chinese/Thai restaurant (01491 873079) just a few steps away in the Arcade on the High Street. The service was really friendly, and the food was great, really tasty and with a number of dishes on the menu that you wouldn't find in your average Chinese.

The village itself is truly picturesque and perfect for a stroll into Streatley by the river. If however, you end up on a rainy afternoon and in need of some shopping or even the cinema, Didcot is only about 10 minutes away (although don't imagine a pretty village – this is more 'mall' in style). Lunch on our way back to London was at the pub in Waltham St Lawrence – fantastic pub food and a proper English cheeseboard with Golden Cross and Wigmore included.

We went to Leatherne Bottel, Riverside Inn and Restaurant, (Goring on Thames, RG8 0HS, 01491 872667).  It was a fabulous location, right on the river, and was recommended to us by friends. It was just a five-minute drive from the hotel. We had cocktails outside by the river and had the weather been warmer we could've dined there too. The restaurant is on its own and feels very private. It was a real find, so beautiful and peaceful. The food was delicious and the wine menu very extensive. Staff were very friendly and accommodating.

The Miller of Mansfield was so perfect, you would be forgiven for not venturing outside. We did a bit of exploring, and have a couple of tips to pass on. There's a lovely walk along the Thames Ridge to the Leatherne Bottle, a gorgeous riverside restaurant with outside seating for those warm summer evenings. Turn right out of the hotel and right at along the road before you get to the river. It's about 30 minutes stroll past some wonderful houses and moorings. There's also another pub in Goring, The John Barleycorn, which is worth a visit if you want a change of scene from the Miller. Lovely staff, and bar billiards! It's 5 minutes walk across the High Street and past the church on the right. The terrace at the Swan in Streatley is also nice for a coffee overlooking the Lock. One pub to avoid is The Bull in Streatley. Lovely from the outside, not so great inside. (Such a shame, as it's in a great position, and would really be improved with a bit of money spending on it.)
