Local restaurants
This part of Khao Lak isn’t overly endowed with eateries; you’re more likely to find roadside shacks serving up authentic (i.e. pretty damn spicy) Thai dishes than upmarket bistros. Phuket itself’s a different story, however. Try Sunday brunch at the bright and buzzing Oriental Spoon (+66 (0)76 316577) in Surin Beach, or the foodie favourite Lim’s (+66 (0)76 344834) on Kalim Beach.

Worth getting out of bed for
Phang Nga Bay is one of southern Thailand’s most scenic spots, with cavern-riddled limestone cliffs and sheer-sided rocky islets towering about the glassy waters. Take a canoe over to Koh Panyi to take in the stilted sea-gypsy village that sits on the water, and check out the ancient paintings on the cave walls of Khao Khien, where you can also catch sight of marine iguanas taking to the waves. Swot up on your culinary skills with Aleenta’s daily Thai cookery course, starting with a chef-led tour of local vegetable markets and culminating in a sampling of your own finely spiced creations. There are cocktail mixology courses on offer too.
