Our favourite rooms: Room 22 is a spacious double with lots of light. Room 24 is slightly darker but cool, with an open-plan bathroom. Room 18 is a lovely regular double. Ask for a room facing the courtyard.

This historic boutique hotel in Extremadura is a tranquil retreat with style and serenity in equal measure. The thick walls and refeshing pool provide an escape from the midday heat in the region far from the well-trodden tourist routes, while low lighting and flickering flames provide a suitable romantic atmosphere in the cool evenings.

Rates: €111–€170, including breakfast.
Check-out: 11h, but midday is possible if the room is not booked out.
Facilities: Solarium. No TVs or air-con, but there is an extensive library and lots of board games.
Poolside: Outdoor saltwater pool, in pristine-white surroundings.
Hotel closed: 8 January–1 February.
Also: The hotel can arrange a host of activities, including 4x4 excursions, wine-tasting, cooking courses, paragliding and donkey treks.

Food & drink

Hotel restaurant: Set in the vaulted refectory, or the cloisters in balmy weather, serving a fresh take on Extremadura’s traditional cuisine, and local Ribera del Guadiana wines. Lunch served 14h–15h30; dinner 21h–23h30.
Dress code: Natural fabrics, to harmonise with the hotel’s organic feel.
Top table: In a candlelit corner of the cloisters.
Room service: 21h–23h for restaurant menu.
Hotel bar: You can order drinks anywhere you like, all hours within reason.

Other facilities

Children: This hotel is better suited to couples - leave the children at home!
