In the know
- Our favourite rooms
- The Mountain Suite, on the first floor of the main house, is the epitome of light, airy 1930s décor, with dark-oak parquet floors and tasteful French-inspired furniture. It also has a private balcony that offers views of Table Mountain. Alternatively, go for one of the two Garden/Pool Suites, in a new building away from the main house. Private and peaceful, these come with their own covered patios.
- Packing tips
- Bring a guide to South African wine – you’re only five minutes from the Constantia wine route, so you’ll definitely want to know your Shiraz from your Sauvignon Blanc.
- Also
- Each bathroom has a huge black-and-white picture of Bette Davis on its wall.

Beaumont House
Cape Town, South Africa[view map]
- Style
- Cape crusader
- Setting
- 1930s décor in leafy suburbia
This stylish 1930s house in the leafy Cape Town suburb of Upper Claremont has more debonair, early 20th-century charm than an Evelyn Waugh character strolling rakishly through an exhibition of Lee Miller photographs. The interiors of Beaumont House are all pale walls, and cream-and-white French-inspired furniture, with lovely, well-chosen touches – a grand piano in the salon, black-and-white canvases in the bathroom – that combine to make you feel as though you’re staying in someone’s home.
