Our favourite rooms: Request a sea or a garden view; it’s worth paying the little bit extra. We also loved the Bastian Suite with its sea-view balcony and swing; the Princess Suite has a private terrace as well as a balcony.

Also: No pets. You can smoke in the bedrooms.

Setting: Close to Fort Cochin’s fishing nets

The Old Harbour Hotel in Fort Cochin is a prime example of simple sophistication; its fresh whitewashed interior is enhanced with hip artwork arrangements, which complement a property that has been refurbished to reflect its former colonial glory to perfection. Bedrooms are spacious and elegant, retaining Dutch and Portuguese influences, and among the highlights is a raised infinity pool in the walled garden, and the modern Keralan restaurant.

Food & drink

Hotel restaurant: 1788 has a versatile and varied modern menu using the freshest ingredients, often organic. As the hotel’s so close to the famous Chinese fishing nets, it offers tempting seafood.
Dress code: Chic salwar kameez, crisp kurtas and designer jeans.
Top table: The tables inside the small dining room are lovely, but for a romantic dinner, eat outside under the stars.
Room service: There isn't room service as such.

Children: Children are welcome at this hotel – but please be aware that it doesn’t offer dedicated child-friendly facilities.
