Local restaurants
Ekali is a little limited restaurant-wise, but upscale suburb Kifissia is a 10-minute drive away and in its centre, the buzzing Kefalari Square, is lined with luxe bars and high-end eateries. Restaurants in the area include Gefsis on Kifisias (+30 210 800 1402) and Varsos on Kassaveti (+30 210 801 2472), perfect for a lunch of spinach and cheese pies, divine rice pudding and their famous home-made yoghurt. If you're eager for more modern art after Life Gallery, then head to the Semiramis Hotel, where ever-changing displays await in glorious technicolour (the owner's one of the top ten collectors in the world); we clocked a Jeff Koons on our visit.

Worth getting out of bed for
In terms of culture, Athens pretty much invented it, so head to the city centre for your fill of museums, classical ruins, and tick-box attractions. For shopping without the stress of the centre, try boutique-lined Levidou Street in Kifissia for a quick credit-card workout. If that doesn't slake your sartorial thirst, the Mall in Maroussi is the second biggest in Greece and provides a home to both high-street and haute couture. The Boboniera cinema on Papadiamenti Street in Kifissia shows foreign films in their original language with Greek subtitles.
