Les Sardines aux Yeux Bleus Mr & Mrs Smith 2009-11-16 5

Mr & Mrs Smith have a trip to this luxury boutique hotel firmly in the diary. So just as soon as they’ve checked in, then checked out the boudoirs, bed linens and breakfast, a full account of their stay will be with you. In the meantime, here’s a little Les Sardines aux Yeux Bleus taster…

From the outside, the only clue that this small hamlet hides a pastel-perfect chambre d’hôte is a subtle sign swinging above the door, bearing an almost prehistoric fish symbol. Through a pair of over-sized wooden doors and Olivier’s warm handshake is momentarily over-shadowed by the sweet chirpings of a family of swallows above the rafters. Worn and wonky stone steps lead upwards to an open atrium, where, if the Provençal sun is shining, the famous light of the region pours in. An old cast iron day-bed bursting with French fabric cushions offers a promising moment's repose.

Though modest in its size (three rooms, two apartments), Les Sardines aux Yeux Blues is big on character and personality. Each room is different from the next, but all share the same bohemian style, combining terracotta tile floors, earthy and antique linens, roll top baths and oddly interesting brocante finds. Shabby-chic, with Provençal DNA if you will.

Beyond the rooms themselves are a sitting room, breakfast room, enchanting garden and pool to enjoy. Breakfast is served either under the clematis in the garden or in the breakfast room where, if chilly, a huge open fire will dispel any shivers. Home-made lemon curd, marmalade and all manner of jams are temptations even when the carrot cake and madelaines, served on beautiful mismatched pottery, have been consumed. TV? No? Room service? No. Bags of charm and a moment to stop, breathe and relax under the sweet scent of the Tilleul tree? Ohhh yes.
