Sample Hérépian's notorious black turnips at L'Ocre Rouge (+33 (0)4 67 95 069 3). It's onbe of the region's best eateries and is particularly good at matching its selecton of palate-picked wines to the individual dishes on its menu of local specialities. L'Auberge de L'Abbeye (+33 (0)4 67 95 34 84) also serves fresh regional cuisine for around €50 a head – wine included.

Worth getting out of bed for
The village of Lamalou-les-Bains is a few minutes from Le Couvent d'Hérépian, and offers both a nine-hole golf course with gorgeous views (+33 (0)4 67 95 08 47, and a huge range of thermal treatments and therapies in its 15 mineral springs. The food markets in Pézénas and Bédarieux are essential picnic stock-up spots.
