In the know

Our favourite rooms
For rustic romance, all rooms come with contemporary king-size four-poster beds, except for Room 5, which has twin beds which can be joined into a king. If you like natural light ask for Rooms 1 or 6 which have an extra set of windows (as they’re on either side of the property), although Room 1 is above the kitchen so you may hear breakfast being prepared and Room 6 is above the dining room so may be noisy in the evening. Rooms 2 and 3 have bathtubs that only fit one person. Ensuite bathrooms include antique claw-foot baths, separate showers and double sinks.
Packing tips
Your own dictionary – Scrabble can get fiercely competitive in this remote setting, warm slippers for lounging around (the bathroom tiles aren’t heated) and some thongs for trekking back and forth between the bush bath and lodge.
Also
Even if you’re not big on the great outdoors, you can picnic on the property’s river within a 10-minute walk of your room. Alternatively, enjoy the sunset over Stonebarn’s dam from the comfort of the front porch (you can fish in it too, and ask the chef to cook your catch afterwards). Six clearly marked fire breaks act as walking trails nearby if you fancy stretching your legs, and you can take a walkie-talkie to stay in touch.

Style
Modern-rustic retreat
Setting
Wild woods and rushing rivers

If you go down to the woods today, you're sure of a big surprise: Stonebarn, a peaceful boutique retreat in Western Australia's tranquil Southern Forests awaits. Surrounded by lush trees, rivers and dams on a 160-acre estate, this contemporary stone lodge, designed by a French architect, is an intimate affair, with personable hosts, tasty food and even an outdoor bush bath for relaxing in this up-and-coming epicurean region (think truffles and wine).

Need to know

Rooms
Six suites.
Rates
AU$345–AU$375, including cooked breakfast.
Check-out
10.30am, but flexible subject to availability. Check-in, 2pm.
Facilities
Library, board games, painting supplies for the artistically inclined, free WiFi and gardens. In rooms: preloaded iPod with dock, flatscreen TV, L’Occitane toiletries, kitchenette, minibar and balcony.
Poolside
There is no pool, and swimming in the property’s dam is not recommended. Go for a swim at the Pemberton swimming pool instead or take an hour's drive to the southern coast.
Eco-friendly
Since there's no running water in the area Stonebarn collects rainwater and filters and stores it for everything from showering to drinking. Much of the hotel’s furnishings were made by local suppliers, and the food is sourced from nearby producers..
Also
Enjoy a hot soak in the bush bath, a candlelit roll-top bath outdoors at the edge of the forest which overlooks the hotel and dam.

Food & drink

Hotel restaurant
Chef Michael Comyns (who co-hosts Stonebarn with wife Alison) whips up a three-course set menu for breakfast, and a two-course dinner, but is happy to accommodate dietary requests. He specialises in French/International-style bistro dining and hearty portions, with top-quality local ingredients sourced from providers in Manjimup and Pemberton. Expect marron from Stonebarn’s dam, vegetables, fruit and herbs from the garden, and truffles from the lodge’s own eco-friendly 2,000 tree trufferie, which grows French Black Perigord truffles. Typical dishes include pink snapper with pumpkin and sweet potato mash, asparagus tips and lemon-butter sauce, chased down with a dark chocolate pot de crème.
Dress code
Lumberjack meets sommelier – feel free to let your hair down but bear in mind the setting is intimate so you’re bound to bump into fellow guests.
Top table
The vast dining room includes a long communal table at the back for dinner parties, and six more intimate tables for two. For the best view and light in the mornings, pick the table in the front corner with windows on both sides.
Last orders
Breakfast is served from 7am till 10am; dinner from 7pm till 8.30pm. The chef prefers not to prepare meals much later because the kitchen noise could disrupt guests.
Room service
None per se as this is an intimate, informal place, but breakfast and dinner can be served in your suite if you fancy some privacy, and minibars come well stocked with snacks and drinks. The lodge can also make you up a hamper for lunch on request.
Hotel bar
There's no bar as such, but you can enjoy a tipple anywhere in the lodge's public areas, or outside on your own private terrace. Stonebarn is still working on acquiring its liquor licence, so no alcohol is sold on the premises yet, but you’re welcome to bring your own. Choose from loads of up-and-coming local wineries; just remember to buy two of everything – one bottle for dinner and another to take home after your holiday.
