Victoria's at Ewingsdale Mr & Mrs Smith 2009-11-19 5

Mr & Mrs Smith have just returned from a stay at this Byron Bay boutique hotel, and just as soon as they've unpacked their yoga kit and swimming costume, a full account of their romantic coastal break will be with you. In the meantime, just to whet your wanderlust, here's a quick snapshot of Victoria's at Ewingsdale.

There's a dash of the stately country manor about Victoria's at Ewingsdale, a  few minutes drive from Bryon Bay and set amid three acres of beautiful landscaped gardens, replete with lush tropical palm trees and views of mountains and the sea.

Sweeping past the manicured lawns and cream verandahs, the interior is equally elegant. A lovely old rocking horse sits in the hall, greeting guests. Bedrooms are pretty, romantic confections, all white and floaty with a mix of Tuscan and French Provencal-style antique furniture, four-poster beds, comfy sofas and graceful writing desks. Curtains are white and diaphanous; old-fashioned fireplaces warm and cosy. Each room is slightly different, but all share marble bathrooms (some with baths set under marble pillars for palatial luxury) and a fairy-tale feel. The toughest choice you'll face is whether to opt for rooms with terracotta balconies giving onto the pretty Italianate courtyard, with its bubbling fountain, or the tranquil gardens or sea.

Outside the palm-fringed, salt-water swimming pool is delightful, surrounded by deck chairs where you can lounge or order fruit in the morning, a quirky cabana for shade and a barbecue area for dining at dusk. There are beauty therapies on hand or you can head forth to explore the area's blissful beaches, country walks and outdoor activities (from horseriding to golf). Alternative, New Age Bryon Bay is also a short drive away, known for its glam-yet-super healthy beachside restaurants and bars. The hotel would suit those who fancy a relaxed country break within easy reach of the beach. It also scores high in the romance stakes, so couples or newly weds should make a beeline for Victoria's.
