Nha Trang Overview
Vietnam
- Coastline
- Mountain-backed bays
- Coast life
- Fluttering ao dais, spluttering cyclos
There’s more to Vietnam’s leading seaside resort than a sweeping stretch of sand. Nha Trang, on the south-central coast, is a buzzing town that offers a compact window on the country for those overwhelmed by the scale of nearby Ho Chi Minh City or Hanoi.
Boasting a beautiful backdrop, hemmed in by jagged peaks and ringed by tropical islands, it is also one of Vietnam’s top dive destinations. Some fear that Nha Trang is on its way to becoming the next Pattaya. There are several high-rise hotels springing up along the beachfront and the nightlife is more raucous than Hoi An or Hué, but it still retains a unique individual charm. It’s not hard to escape by boat to a secluded bay if it all gets too much.
Naturally Nha Trang
Nha Trang Beach is one of the few stretches of sand in Vietnam to be located in a city, offering the best of both worlds. Mr and Mrs Smith can laze away the day from the comfort of their loungers, then prowl the urban jungle by night, browsing restaurants and hopping bars. Live the quiet life in your resort, and the high life in town.
Local Knowledge
- Taxis
- From the airport taxis cost about US$16, although it’s less than US$10 in the other direction. Once in Nha Trang they, along with cyclos (three-wheeled pedicabs) and xe oms (motorbike taxis) are plentiful, but ask the driver to turn on the meter or at least negotiate the fare before you head off.
- Tipping culture
- Tipping is a relatively new phenomenon in Vietnam thanks to the arrival of mass tourism. If you’re happy with the service, consider leaving an extra 10 per cent.
- Siesta and fiesta
- Banks and government agencies take a little break during the day, so tend to ply their trade 8am to 11.30am and 1pm to 4pm, plus Saturday mornings. Shops usually keep longer hours 8am to 8pm. Restaurants are open until around 10pm. A handful of bars will stagger beyond the midnight hour.
- Packing tips
- Mrs Smith, you need to bring lots of flowing dresses to compete with the ao dais on show in Nha Trang. The Vietnamese have a proverb that their female national dress covers everything but hides nothing, so don’t be afraid to be a little provocative. Mr Smith, no such worries for you – pack your Gap slacks and relax.
