Refined riverside stay Spring Cottage started life as the Countess of Orkney’s summerhouse in 1813. This bucolic three-bedroom stay rests amid the wooded grounds of five-star hotel Cliveden – the key players of the 1960s Profumo affair once frolicked here. The cottage is surrounded by a private, flower-bedecked English garden; from a covered porch, guests can watch the Thames run by. Inside, there are cockle- and toe-warming open fireplaces and a country-style kitchen, where guests can rustle up leisurely breakfasts or intimate candlelit meals. The cottage is as blue-blooded as its stately neighbour, but a warm, homey ambience is the sugar-dusting on this quintessentially British confection.
