If Viceroy Washington DC had a motto, it may well be ‘out with the beige, in with the bold’. Worlds apart from the capital’s political fray, the hotel’s saturated colour palettes, city-inspired artworks (including a collage of DC native Marvin Gaye) and funked-up communal spaces reflect the creative spirit of Logan Circle’s buzzy 14th street. Rooms, by contrast, are distinctly presidential – former condos, there’s plenty of space for executive antics. Soaring across the building’s façade you’ll find an abstract mural by No Kings Collective’s Brandon Hill which sets the tone for Dovetail, the hotel’s loved-by-locals bar and restaurant dishing out seasonal, American sharing plates and bespoke cocktails. But the real triumph of this artful pad can be found up on the rooftop, where stately splashes are soundtracked by the hum of the city below.

Our favourite rooms
As former condos, you can bet on space aplenty in any of the hotel’s rooms, though we particularly love the City View Studio King for its sweeping vistas and the King Suite for its freestanding bath tub and exceptionally large living area.
Poolside
Flanked by pillowy day-beds, outdoor lounge space, and within pleasing proximity to the bar, the seasonal rooftop pool makes a fine spot for penthouse paddling. Open each year from Memorial Day through to Labor Day, expect far-flung and close-by cocktails.
Spa
There’s no spa, but Viceroy’s 24-hour fitness center is on hand with state-of-the-art cardio machines, a Peloton bike and free weights to keep you feeling fresh.

Hotel restaurant
The hotel’s restaurant, Dovetail, reflects the creative spirit of the area with blue mosaic floors, mid-century seating and textural yellow flourishes that compliment Brandon Hill’s exterior mural. Conviviality is encouraged through a menu of all-American sharing plates and cosy indoor-outdoor spaces. The largest on 14th street, the heated patio has become somewhat of a second living room for Logan Circle’s discerning diners. Find them gathering night or day, rain or shine (yep, there’s a fire pit and a retractable roof, too) surrounded by polished-off dishes of stuffed mountain trout wrapped in or potato gnocchi with winter squash, kale and Burgundy truffle.
Hotel bar
Prop up the blue, mosaic-tiled bar at Dovetail to watch the bartenders shake and stir through the evening – even better if it’s between 4.30pm and 6pm Sunday to Thursday, where happy hour’s $10 cocktails will have you grinning into the weekend. Take a Harvest Moon (tequila, mezcal, gooseberry, allspice dram, lime and charcoal) out on the heated terrace or head to BPM coffee and wine for a grape-fuelled tasting session. If it’s views you’re after, Hush rooftop bar has just the ticket. Open throughout the summer, grab a craft beer and sink into the cushioned outdoor seating as the capital twinkles below.

Planes
Four miles away, journey time from the Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport clocks in at just under 20 minutes. In a taxi you’re looking at around $25 each way.
Trains
McPherson Square subway station is a 15-minute walk from the hotel, servicing the blue line (which heads south past the Pentagon) and orange (passing the eastern Federal Center). If you’re day-tripping further afield, Union station is two miles away, with routes across the USA and Canada.

Worth getting out of bed for
Bracketed by the buzzy bars of 14th street, leafyparks and impressively ornate 19th-century architecture, Viceroy DC is perfectly placed for culture vultures. The area’s Gothic Victorian and Romanesque revival mansions were once home to DC’s most noble natives, these days, however, you’re more likely to encounter groups of mat-wielding moms taking post-yoga coffee beside the bespectacled work-from-home crowd or rugged rock-n-rollers grabbing a bite in between sound-checks. Nab a bench at Logan Circle park and watch them come and go or better still, navigate the Logan Circle Heritage Trail – a 1.5-mile loop around the district following a series of 15 signs dotted around key sites of interest. You needn’t venture far for dinner and a show, though exactly what type of show we’ll leave down to you; there’s the intimate, four stage Studio Theatre where you’ll a programme of contemporary productions by cutting-edge playwrights or Black Cat, an indie gig venue who’ve spent the the last 30 years welcoming all kinds of troubled troubadours through their doors from Fugazi to the Foo Fighters. Elsewhere in the Executive City, don’t miss the Phillips Collection, America’s first contemporary art museum which includes Renoir’s Luncheon of the Boating Party and a characteristically atmospheric Rothko room. Bookworms can lose hours in Kramers, the city’s oldest bookstore, while history lovers will be thrilled by the Civil War fortifications, colonial houses and working mills of Rock Creek Park. Oh, and there’s supposedly some kind of White House around these parts, too.

Any given night of the week you’ll find the who’s who of DC’s dining scene tucking into country duck terrine or steak frites and escargot at Le Diplomate’s little slice of Paris. Pork enthusiasts at The Pigpedal a seasonal menu of elevated chops and shanks while at the loved-by-locals Logan Tavern you’ll find informal farm-to-fork fare and, come Sunday brunch, a DIY Bloody Mary bar to banish those Saturday night scaries.
Local cafés
Feed your mind, body and soul at Busboys and Poets, a grassroots community café and bookstore. For wholesome breakfast bites, single-origin coffee and loose-leaf teas, head to Slipstream - the banana bread with maple butter is a must.
Local bars
Inspired by dim-lit Victorian pubs, the Crown & Crow is decked out with ornate chandeliers, burgundy booth seating and a lovingly restored oak bar where craft cocktails are shaken and stirred into the small hours. You’ll find Cork Wine Bar on the other side of the aesthetic spectrum with clean lines, natural light and plenty of exposed brick. Oh, and over 250 bottles from international, indie producers, too.
