Our favourite rooms
The river-spying suites are eye-poppingly, breathtakingly lovely: our favourites include the Arch Suite for its original – yup – arch, the King’s Suite for its incredible wooden coffered ceiling and the Queen’s Suite for its stucco work and unabashedly romantic white-and-blue bathroom, whose tiles date back to 1901. Deluxe rooms also merit mention for their views of the Bica neighbourhood.

Lisbon lounging: silks, linens and leather. Bring something slinky and seductive to flit down the staircase in.
Hotel restaurant
Informal Suba showcases Verride Palácio’s more modern side: it’s bright, light and decorated with pale marble and wooden flooring. The views take centre stage, but the playful fusion food comes a close second. Chef Fábio Alves fuses Portuguese and Mediterranean influences; try the moreish black-truffle oxtail ravioli.
Hotel bar
The rooftop bar is another jewel in the Palácio’s gem-studded crown, thanks to its 360-degree views of the city, river and ocean. Traditional Portuguese crockery decorates the bar’s chunky wooden tables; the overall look is pleasingly relaxed.

As soon as our reviewers have returned from this historic hotel in Santa Catarina and unpacked their Portuguese tiles and tarts, a full account of their city break will be with you. In the meantime, to whet your wanderlust, here's a quick peek inside Verride Palácio Santa Catarina in Lisbon…
Live like ye olde Lisbon nobility at elegant, historic Verride Palácio Santa Catarina, an 18th-century townhouse with 19 bedrooms and a prime location. There’s not a shabby corner in sight – rooms are kitted out with milk-and-honey hues, ornate tiles, ornamental ceilings, marble flooring and pops of aqua – but the rooftop terrace is particularly winsome. Its not-so-secret weapons include a bar and swimming pool, both of which have 360-degree views of the city, the river and the ocean. Since R&R is hungry work, Verride Palácio Santa Catarina has a dazzling duo of restaurants up its sleeve: an inventive gastro bar by the name of Suba and the more formal Criatura, where sharing plates get a classic Portuguese spin. If you can take your eyes off the hotel for a second (unlikely), the best of Lisbon awaits outside.
