Setting

Nouveau Nisantasi neighbourhood

Boutique hotel The Stay Nisantasi brings a little German flavour to Istanbul, with its Bauhaus-revering interiors, courtesy of design firm Autoban. A neutral palette of taupe, cream and mink makes it a restful space, and you can add a dash of colour with the dramatic outfits you’ve bought in the local boutiques. Some of the suites have terraces, with the Bosphorus sparkling in the distance from higher floors. The Art Nouveau exterior blends in seamlessly with the stylish surrounds, which include fashionista-favoured cafés, buzzy bars and refined neighbourhood restaurants.

Our favourite rooms

For some outside space in a hot, hectic city, it’s got to be a ‘with terrace’ room: go for a Terrace Deluxe Suite or Terrace Junior Suite, roll back the fully retractable windows and enjoy the Nisantasi views. Top tip: if you want to throw in a glimpse of the Bosphorus, request a room on the seventh floor. Enjoy.

Top Table

Stake out the curving cream sofa in between the bookshelves, or slide onto the brown leather banquette.

Dress Code

Bust out that day’s shopping purchases, or go rogue in high street.

Hotel restaurant

There are so many places to eat in the neighbourhood that the hotel has gone for more of a laidback-lounge feel rather than a full restaurant, with a simple, straightforward menu of both Turkish and global faves. Expect California-inspired quinoa salads, chicken schnitzels, teriyaki beef and offbeat-but-it-works salmon and avocado pizza. Breakfast is a spread of cereals and fresh fruit, with eggs and organic bacon cooked to order.

Hotel bar

There’s a bar that’s part of the restaurant, library and lounge hybrid where you can enjoy a wine, whisky or cocktail.

Last orders

Breakfast is served from 7.30am to 11am. Food is available in the library lounge until 9pm. The bar opens at 5pm and calls time at 10pm.

Room service

Anything on the full restaurant menu can be dialled up to your room if you like.

Turkey

The Stay Nisantasi is in the namesake Istanbul neighbourhood, part of the city’s designer-shopping district.

Planes

Istanbul Airport is a 45-minute drive from the hotel. It’s also an option to touch down at the city’s Sabiha Gokcen Airport, from where it’s an hour by car to the Stay. Hotel transfers from either hub cost €99 each way, plus tax.

Trains

The nearest Metro station is Osmanbey – a 10-minute walk away – on the M2 line.

Automobiles

The Nisantasi neighbourhood is around a 15-minute drive from Istanbul’s old city. There’s no parking at the hotel, so you’ll be best off sticking to cab and Metro rides.

Worth getting out of bed for

As you may have guessed, the hotel is in Istanbul’s Nisantasi neighbourhood, which is notably chic and glamorous thanks to its prevailingly designer stores. Pop downstairs to Prada, or check out Turkish heroes like Rifat Ozbek, who also has a boutique nearby. Board a boat and cruise down the Bosphorus, or eat your way around the city on a Culinary Backstreets tour. To see colourful houses that make Notting Hill look muted, head to the Balat neighbourhood and prepare to taste the rainbow. For a (sedate) day rave on an island, sail across to Sedef Adasi and take residence on a Elio Sedef beach-club sunlounger. Check out the impressive collection and interesting exhibitions on display at the Istanbul Modern, a 15-minute drive from the hotel.

Local restaurants

Stockpile all the carbs you didn’t get round to at breakfast with a trip to Dandin, Karakoy’s most beloved bakery. In the birthplace of kebabs, you’re probably going to be surrounded by great ones, but be the best at Peymane, where the grilled-meat-in-a-garden set-up gets even better thanks to the jazz soundtrack. More delicious Turkish food awaits at Hunkar, a family-run favourite serving up sizzling meat skewers since 1950.

Local bars

Book in at the strait-edge terrace of Park Samdan at Hotel les Ottomans, or head up to the rooftop of Mentha, where things can get lively.

As soon as our reviewers have returned from this boutique hotel in Turkey and unpacked their shiny new designer threads, a full account of their city break will be with you. In the meantime, to whet your wanderlust, here's a quick peek inside the Stay Nisantasi in Istanbul

When it comes to luxury hotels, you know you’re in good company when there’s a Prada flagship downstairs. The Stay Nisantasi has some very notable neighbours, including Louis Vuitton, Hermès and Cartier (not to mention sartorially skilled local hero Rifat Ozbek). The neighbourhood sets the style bar high, and the hotel keeps it classy with interiors by hip design firm Autoban and a Celine-worthy neutral palette. There are 44 rooms, the best of which have terraces, from where you can watch the fashion-forward crowd come and go on the streets below. There’s a library-lounge hybrid serving up a simple menu of global faves if you don’t want to venture out – but you really probably should, since some of Istanbul’s most in-vogue eateries and buzziest bars are on your doorstep. The more touristy sights are a little further, but, with big-name labels aplenty, Zoolander would feel most at home here in Nisantasi. Put your best looks forward and watch out for the paps.
