One of the cottages dates back 250 years from the Roundtree’s working-farm days, and its land was originally owned by one of Amagansett’s founding families, as far back as 1700.

Our favourite rooms

Original architectural features and oodles of space have secured a place in our hearts for the two- and three-bedroom cottages. Ideal for idlers, the one-bedroom cottage adjoining the main house has its own private garden. Deluxe rooms are a spacious option for two.

Packing tips

Bike-friendly threads and flats you can wheel around town in. A cashmere layer or two to bolster your staying power at hotel-arranged beach bonfires.

In-room massage treatments (extra cost); a parking pass for all East Hampton town beaches. Yoga classes in the garden are held on summer Saturdays. Shell paths and stepped entrances to communal areas mean this property is not wheelchair accessible.

Pet‐friendly

Continental breakfast is served in the breakfast area, although this can easily be delivered to your room or set up on the lawn on clement summer mornings. There’s no restaurant here, but the Roundtree compensates with afternoon tea and cookies, and nightly s’mores around the fire-pit.

Hotel bar

There’s no drinking den in situ, but this is made up for by a handful of thirst-quenching options a short walk away.

Last orders

Breakfast is served 8am–10am. Afternoon tea is a movable feast, and s’mores has its own happy hour, but can be rearranged on request.

To the easterly end of South Fork Long Island, where the land tapers towards Montauk, you’ll find tranquil Amagansett. This hip hamlet on the outskirts of East Hampton has all the beach appeal of a traditional Hamptons town, only with less of the bustle.

Planes

Long Island MacArthur Airport is a 90-minute drive away, or it’s two and a half hours by car to New York’s JFK international hub.

Trains

From Manhattan you can be in Amagansett in around three hours by train, thanks to the Long Island Rail Road, which serves South Fork all the way to Montauk. Amagansett LIRR station is just a 10-minute walk or short hop in a cab from the Roundtree.

Automobiles

On-site parking at the Roundtree is free and features a Tesla charging station for electric vehicles. A car is handy for exploring the island’s many beaches and a complimentary parking permit for East Hamptons beaches comes with your stay.

Other

The famous Hamptons Jitney stops in Amagansett if you fancy braving South Fork from Manhattan by coach. Once you’re checked in, the hotel’s free-to-borrow bikes and electric Beach Buggy (which transfers guests to beach and back), may be all the transport you need.

Worth getting out of bed for

This beach hamlet on the south shores of Long Island has village frills of its own aplenty, as well as the delights of East Hampton, 10 minutes away. The Roundtree itself sits on Main Street, in the refined company of farmers’ markets, cafés and shops. North-shore Sag Harbor, with its antique shops and cafés, is just 20 minutes away by car.

Local restaurants

There’s a colonial feel to the wood-panelled interiors and fine floral upholstery at upscale eatery Wölffer Kitchen, an Amagansett outpost of the namesake winery. Palate-piquing pizzas and seasonal salads sit alongside a refined menu of grills, fish and vegetarian options. At weekends, it’s open for brunch as well as dinner. 

In the moodily lit, white-linened dining room at East Hampton Grill, linger over a classic American menu that celebrates surf and turf, including the lauded House cheeseburger. The dry martinis come recommended.

Local cafés

Amagansett’s answer to Whole Foods, selling produce from its farm, Amber Waves is also your neighbourhood stop for takeaway coffee, irresistible scones and muffins, and salad bowls that easily put other picnic fare in the shade.

Either outpost of Carissa’s sleekly industrial-style bakery in East Hampton – one on Newtown Lane, the other slightly nearer on Pantigo Road – will tempt you into a daily pilgrimage to stock up on delectable bread and pastries for your beach picnic.

Local bars

There’s a fun, local flavour to Stephen Talkhouse, a low-ceilinged cocktail den of live music, parasolled patio tables and a quieter back bar – all only a few doors down from the Roundtree. 

Whether you opt for the moreish Mexican small plates is up to you, but do head to Coche Comedor (from the same stable as Nick and Toni’s in East Hampton) for its fabulous cocktail menu, where margaritas, agave and sangria feature as heavily as you’d hope.

Approaching this wood-shingled stay through its lushly lawned gardens, your first impression is more homestead than hotel. It’s a homely theme that underpins any stopover here: cottages and suites have their own front doors; beach kit and bikes are free to borrow, and the generously sized grounds, yours to potter in. Happily, luxury touches feature in equal measure. Artfully restored outbuildings are home to sleekly urban interiors featuring warm woods, neutral furnishings and crisp, white frette linens. Guest experiences are as Hamptonian as they are carefully curated: friendly staff will organise anything from an in-room massage to lemonade making for juniors, to a romantic beach bonfire for two as the sun sets.
