Balinese bolthole, the Oberoi Beach Resort, is an oceanfront warren of wonder centred around its very own reminiscent-of-Rome amphitheatre. But thankfully Maximus never reached this sun-soaked Indonesian outpost, so instead the Oberoi’s serene stage is set for local dancers, crafting artisans and alfresco dinners. Throw in a spa dotted with lily ponds, hand-carved teak interiors, gargoyle-guarded suites and a beachside pool, and you’ll quite quickly forget the hustle of Seminyak’s centre is merely moments away.

Our favourite rooms
Villas are the best of the balés, and when your room’s been decked out with all the modcons, intricately hand-carved furnishings and a four-poster bed under grand vaulted ceilings you’d think there’s little else to ask for… But look a little further and you’ll spot that outdoor frills vary, ranging from a private courtyard and garden view to a sizeable pool sitting splendidly amidst manicured gardens in sight of the ocean.
Poolside
Just beyond the amphitheatre, the swimming pool sits in equal splendour, lined with gold-and-purple parasols, royal blue sun loungers and the honey-hued sands of Seminyak’s Kayu Aya Beach.
Spa
Two glass-sided treatment pavilions with lily-pond views are available for traditional Balinese body scrubs, massages inspired by ancient Indian healing methods and mineral-focused facials. The Oberoi Spa also has a beauty salon, gym and tennis court within the secluded complex.

Today’s Oberoi is on the site of Seminyak’s original beach resort, established in the 1970s as a clutch of exclusive villas – something to contemplate when you’re admiring its maturely planted estate and prime oceanfront setting.

Sustainability efforts
Efforts are made to ensure energy and water consumption is kept to a minimum, dishes are prepared with ingredients from local suppliers to help minimise food miles and waste, and the hotel has a conservation programme to protect the island’s turtles.
Ask for a table on the terrace at Frangipani for vast views of the Indian Ocean. Every now and again, dinners are dished up alfresco in the amphitheatre.

A simple beach coverup will suffice at Frangipani, but be sure to bring out your finery for dinner at Kura Kura.
Hotel restaurant
View-blessed Frangipani Café serves up Balinese breakfasts and all-day bites, including salads and sushi, alfresco. Dinner is under the lofty vaulted ceilings of fine-dining restaurant Kura Kura, where Indonesian classics take the lead: yuzu-glazed yellowfish tuna, stir-fried prawn noodles and spiced chicken baked in a creamy coconut sauce are just a few favourites.
Hotel bar
Drinks flow at both restaurants, but for classic cocktails zhuzhed-up with a Balinese touch (arak appears in abundance) and taken on hand-carved teak bar stools, we’re looking at you, Kayu Bar.
Last orders
Breakfast is served at Frangipani between 7am and 11am, and lunch is from noon till 6pm. Dinner at Kura Kura is 7pm to 11pm, and the bar closes at midnight.

Planes
Most European and US flights require at least one stopover before arriving into Bali’s international Ngurah Rai Airport in Denpasar – make sure to organise a tourist visa before arriving. From there, the hotel is a 45-minute drive away; private transfers can be arranged on request for an additional charge.
Automobiles
Cars are available to rent at the airport and it’s a pretty straightforward ride down Jalan Sunset Road and Jalan Kayu Aya to the resort, which has a private carpark and free valet parking.
Worth getting out of bed for
The Oberoi Beach Resort’s fly-and-flop charms will tempt you to stay put, but there are simple ways to spice up your stay with a little Balinese flavour: the hotel can arrange a full moon celebration by the beach (calendar allowing) and a priest-led sunset blessing at the nearby 15th-century Petitenget Temple. For the adventurous, take to the trails and spend the morning mountain biking from Kintamani to Ubud, go on a guided trek through Taro’s tropical rice paddies and coffee plantations; raft-worthy rapids await along the Ayung and Telaga Waja rivers, and 4x4 tours take you through Unesco-listed Jatiluwih’s cacao trees, mangosteens and coffee bean bushes. Aquaphiles can splash and slide at Waterbom Bali and surf the waves at Kuta Beach or venture further afield with a catamaran cruise to Nusa Lembongan, a Crusoe-worthy island off Bali’s southeastern coast. If you’re stopping at Oberoi between May and October, ask staff to take you to the onsite turtle sanctuary, where Olive Ridley turtles come to nest along the beach.
Local restaurants
Mama San serves seafood-focused fare for lunch and dinner in an industrially designed space along Seminyak’s Jalan Raya Kerobokan. Southeast Asian cuisine helms Batik’s menu of Indonesian-inspired stir-fries and traditional Thai curries, served in the restaurant's fabric-swathed dining room, which is a paean to the intricate art of Balinese batik. For grab-and-go dishes, Chai’ba grills tandoori kebabs, fries up fresh fish and has a dedicated menu for those seeking ‘curry in a hurry’.
Local cafés
Sisterfields is known for its all-day Aussie-inspired brunch menu, with freshly flipped pancakes, just-baked pastries and eggs any which way. Inspired by Indonesia’s warung kopi coffee stalls, Titik Temu Café brews like the old days with floor seating in a traditional lesehan layout.
Local bars
Spend days sipping Bali-brewed beers and arak-based cocktails along one of Potato Head’s famed beachside cabanas, otherwise Single Malt (68 Jalan Kayu Aya) has a speakeasy style for post-poolside aperitifs.

Once you’ve been ceremoniously adorned with a welcome lei and handed whichever spritz tops the menu that day, you’ll quite quickly start to feel the Oberoi Beach Resort’s storied stress-reducing abilities kicking in. Remaining tensions release as a labyrinth of walkways and tropical gardens, dotted with gargoyle-style sculptures (famed in Indonesia for their protective properties), reveal a batch of traditionally thatched balés. Things may look humble from the outside, but once inside, these suites are anything but: marbled bathrooms have spacious sunken tubs big enough for two, original hand-carved furnishings complement teak accents and private outdoor spaces range from a terrace to a courtyard garden or even an exclusive pool. Days are dozy, so we’d suggest leaving any step-counting smart watches at home, since wanders tend to stretch only as far as the palatial beachfront pool and restaurant pavilions, perhaps with the occasional spa visit thrown in, too.
