Setting

By the beach

Bali’s Potato Head Suites and Studios in Seminyak is a feelgood eco-friendly stay. Wake up with morning yoga sessions or leisurely cups of coffee on your studio’s private balcony before tucking into plant-based breakfasts, slathering on some coral-conscious sun protection and hitting the beach club or sprawling infinity pool. Take a break from the sun with rejuvenating spa sessions or become one with the surf on a private lesson with the hotel’s in-house wave-catching expert. Tote along the tots – there’s a family-friendly pool and space for kids in each studio – or make it a grown-up getaway (all the better for dancing the night away at the club next-door).

Need to know

Rooms

226, including 58 suites.

Check–Out

Noon, but flexible, subject to availability. Earliest check-in, 2pm.

More details

Rates include breakfast, a welcome cup of Jamu (a traditional drink) and priority day-bed bookings at Potato Head Beach Club.

Also

The slippers supplied in each studio are made from coconut husks, woven palm leaves, fabric offcuts and pond reeds (and are fully biodegradable). And your in-room bar includes a built-in ice well, custom cocktail tools, house-infused spirits, natural syrups, aromatic bitters, fresh fruit and a recipe book from award-winning mixologist Dre Masso.

At the hotel

Beach, WiFi. In rooms: beach bags, sun hats, a ‘zero-waste kit’, replenished-daily mineral water, tea- and coffee-making kit, biodegradable slippers, cotton robes, and eco-friendly bath and suncare products.

Our favourite rooms

There’s not a bad room in the eco-friendly lot: Sunrise, Bamboo and Desa Studios primarily differ in their views. Looking for a little more room to stretch out in (and direct views of the surf)? Spring for an Oceanfront Studio and you’ll get double the space, a hammock-draped balcony and uninterrupted ocean views.

Poolside

Take your pick from the trio of glittering pools (all outdoor and unheated). By the beach club, there’s a sprawling pool that’s split into two – with a Balinese temple floating in the centre; to one side there’s a family-friendly shallow end, and at the other side there’s a deeper end for proper swimming (or splash-free floating). There’s also a second adults-only pool.

Spa

The Spa specialises in holistic Balinese wellbeing treatments. Book in for calming rose facials, skin-renewing salt scrubs, healing reflexology sessions and stress-busting massages. In addition to the five soothing treatment rooms, there’s an endorphin-peddling gym.

Packing tips

Bring a swimsuit from your favourite ethical brand, your yoga kit and a taste for dancing the night away.

Also

Potato Head Suites and Studios is unfortunately not accessible for wheelchair users, due to uneven terrain and stairs.

Children

Welcome. Futon beds can be made up for children and families can spread out between connecting rooms. There are child-dedicated events at the beach club and a sustainable kids’ club is in the works.

Sustainability efforts

To its sustainability-loving core. The hotel shuns single-use plastics, uses recycled products – including furniture and building materials – throughout and composts organic materials. Each studio is supplied with an eco-friendly ‘zero-waste kit’ that’s stocked with refillable water bottles, an RPET reusable tote bag, bamboo cutlery and straws, an organic cotton pouch, a lunchbox and ointment pots to fill with all-natural sunscreen, after-sun, hand sanitiser and insect repellent.

Food and Drink

Top Table

In the evening, snag a seat at Tanaman under the oval skylight to steal glimpses of the stars with your meal.

Dress Code

Grab a Balinese printed shirt, don with your breeziest trousers or beachy skirt and you’ll fit right in (and have room for dessert).

Hotel restaurant

At alfresco eatery Kaum, order Indonesian sharing plates of grilled prawns, wok-fried noodles, spicy sambal and more. Seafood-centric Ijen has a daily-changing menu that’s shaped by the morning’s catch; settle in for lunches and dinners of fire-cooked fish. Authentic Indonesian recipes are the inspiration behind plant-based restaurant Tanaman, where the menu nods to nostalgic local flavours and uses organic produce in dishes such as mushroom satay, jackfruit rendang, house-made kombucha and lumpia – a fresh rice-paper spring roll served with sambal. A favourite with younger visitors, Pizza Garden serves up thin-crust, wood-fired pizzas topped with creative combinations of local cheeses, meats and more Indonesian produce. And at the Beach Club, you can order international mains, light bites and thirst-quenching fruity cocktails.

Hotel bar

Bar Akademi is part concoction lab, part open-air cocktail party. All of the creative muddles are mixed up with native botanicals and fresh juices, and are inspired by time-honoured drinks, such as Indonesian arak and Jamu. Try the Barong Zombie – a mixture of absinthe, rum and pineapple arak laced with jackfruit and pink citrus – if you’re feeling particularly brave. Surf-side drinks can also be ordered up at the Beach Club, which has a menu of light bites and mains for when hunger (courtesy of that salty sea air) strikes.

Last orders

Beach Club is open from 10am to 2am; Kaum, Ijen and Pizza Garden from noon to midnight; and Tanaman from 6pm to midnight. Akademi serves from 4pm to 1am.

Room service

Your in-room bar has its own ice well, cocktail fixings and recipe book, so there’s no chance of going thirsty overnight.

Address
Potato Head Suites and Studios
Jl. Petitenget 51B Seminyak
Kabupaten Badung

Indonesia

Located on the beach in Seminyak, on the same property as Potato Head Beach Club and sister hotel Katamama, the entire property is Potato Head Suites and Studios.

Planes

Ngurah Rai International Airport is 13 kilometres from the hotel, a 45-minute drive. Hotel transfers can be arranged for IDR450,000 a car (for up to three guests) each way.

Automobiles

Seminyak City is 10 minutes away by car and the hotel has an on-site car park; we don’t think you’ll need it much though, with a beach a short stroll from your studio and plenty of on-site activities to keep you entertained.

Worth getting out of bed for

Salute the sunrise with daily morning yoga (from 7.30am to 8.30am), hosted in the Desa’s amphitheatre. Spots are limited, so book the day before if you want to get your morning stretch session in. The hotel also holds fitness classes on the beach (you can’t beat the view) – everything from boxing to strength training to swimming.

The in-house DJ will keep the beat going at Potato Head Beach Club during the weekly music events; international names often drop by to headline, too.

By day, Potato Head Beach Club is a place to swim, snack and sip by the two infinity pools (or directly on the sand). Need a break from the beach? Explore Ubud with a Green Village Tour or take a guided walking tour of Desa Tenganan; ask at reception for details. Looking for a more… alternative experience? Get down and dirty, and learn the art of traditional Balinese mud wrestling.

Have you always dreamed of catching a wave? Spend a day surfing at Canggu Beach with the hotel’s local expert on hanging 10. For more laid-back oceanfront lounging, head to chilled-out Pererenan Beach, which is less busy than Seminyak or Canggu.

Local restaurants

Plant-based Kynd Community dishes out colourful, almost-too-pretty-to-eat brunches of fruit-topped açaí bowls, greenery-filled takes on savoury breakfast favourites, gourmet toasts and fluffy waffles topped with generous scoops of coconut ice-cream. Freshly pressed juices, cooling iced coffees and fruit-laced cocktails are on offer, too. For lunch, make your way to La Lucciola for Mediterranean fare with Asian flair. Try the pan-seared coral trout with marinated artichokes, and save room for a light-as-air lemon and vanilla-bean soufflé. Modern café Fika is a good bet for fresh dinners of marinated octopus, roast-pumpkin salad, pan-fried mackerel and salmon-topped Nordic red-rice bowls. For a date-night-worthy evening meal, book a table for two at Bikini Restaurant Bali, where the menu is inspired by the island’s seasonal produce. Start with pickled beetroot drizzled in Balinese vanilla oil, then move on to prawn tails with laksa-infused heritage rice porridge or cacio e pepe gnocchi. For dessert, share dishes – it’ll be hard to settle on just one – of single-origin chocolate fondant, white-chocolate tiramisu and winter truffle with coconut and coffee honey.

Local bars

Not just for decadent dinners, Bikini is one heck of a drinking destination. Inventive cocktails are crafted using Bali’s local products – olive-oil fat washes, house-made syrups and infused gins. Say cheers with spiced whisky sours, fig- and cinnamon-infused bourbon cocktails and a decidedly tropical dragon-fruit and gin number.
