Setting

Napa Valley’s culinary capital

The Estate Yountville really is the full package – actually, this 22-acre oenophiles’ playground is several luxury deals wrapped up in one big Napa Wine Country stay, with a five-bedroom private villa and destination spa thrown in for good measure. With its olive-tree-lined walkways and trickling fountains, the Estate is reminiscent of a Tuscan village, where rooms and suites are spread throughout Hotel Villagio, and farmhouse-chic bungalows at rustic sister property, Vintage House. You’ll soon be seeing double – or triple – with two pools, a trio of restaurants, and endless wine experiences on the Estate’s working vineyard and in Napa Valley’s tasting rooms.

Our favourite rooms

Choosing between the swanked-up stays at Hotel Villagio and the more rustic farmhouse-style rooms at Vintage House is a bit like deciding whether you’d like a glass of red or white. Villagio’s interiors are darker and deeper in palette and tone, while Vintage’s light-filled, vaulted spaces feel crisp and refreshing. To really soak up the vineyard views, we’d opt for the Villagio Estate Suite – the freestanding egg-shaped tub has swoon-worthy curving edges, and you can often spot hot-air balloons rising over the vines from the private patio.

Poolside

Hotel Villagio and Vintage House both boast heated outdoor pools (open daily and round-the-clock). Clinking glasses of cabernet can be heard from Villagio’s more spirited poolside scene, as wine-centric conversations flow from the loungers (and glowing fire pit after dark). Vintage House is an altogether more relaxed affair, where robe-clad guests pad around the pool in spa-style slippers and sink into a slumber induced by several grape-based cocktails. There’s also a private pool in the Estate’s villa, for utterly secluded swims and hot tub soaks.

Spa

The Spa, at 13,000-square-foot, is something of a wellness showstopper – crackling fireplaces and gently cascading waterfalls set a soothing scene. Mineral-stone massages, gold hydralifting facials, Hungarian moor mud wraps (and more) are delivered in a serenely styled network of 12 treatment rooms (including five private spa suites and couples’ suites with soaking tubs). Guests can also unwind in indoor-outdoor relaxation zones, eucalyptus-infused steam rooms, dry saunas, Swiss hydrotherapy showers, and alfresco Jacuzzis. Our pick of the bunch? The Estate’s signature organic grape-seed exfoliation treatment, inspired by the vineyard backdrop and packed with powerful antioxidants. There’s also an impressively equipped 24-hour fitness center tucked in between the two properties, with Peloton bikes, free weights, cardio machines, and more. Or you can bend with the vines at yoga classes held in the grounds.

Food and Drink

Top Table

Anywhere with a vineyard view – you’re here for the wine, after all.

Dress Code

Light linens and layers (Napa nights can get chilly).

Hotel restaurant

The Estate is as vast as its dining options are varied. Sizzling tapas dishes, Catalan cured meats, and Iberian cheese boards are served at Spanish-inspired Coqueta (open daily for lunch and dinner). The free-flowing sangria keeps the atmosphere lively (especially when the traditional Spanish party pitchers come out), and there’s an extensive cocktail list to last you long into the night. Vintner and award-winning chef Michael Chiarello is behind the Italian menu at Bottega, which puts the very best of Italy on a plate using locally grown ingredients like cured olives and farm-fresh cheeses. The deep-red interiors are welcoming and rustic, lit by Murano chandeliers – and the outdoor patio is aglow at night, warmed by two stone fireplaces. Chiarello keeps café and pizzeria Ottimo (open daily between 10am and 5pm) more casual, with a relaxed menu of grilled paninis, homemade pasta, and wood-fired pizzas, plus a deli-style counter where you can stock up on artisan produce, cocktail kits, and signed copies of Chiarello’s cookbooks.

Hotel bar

Dark beams, exposed brickwork, and lots of leather furniture set a sophisticated tone to the bar at Hotel Villagio (open Thursday to Saturday between 11am and midnight, and Sunday to Wednesday 11am and 11pm). As you’d expect, the wine list feels never-ending (in a good way), including bottles from the Estate’s working vineyard. The craft cocktails are fragrant with edible flowers picked from the bar’s herb garden, just steps from the pool.

An hour north of San Francisco within wine-growing Napa Valley, The Estate Yountville and its vineyards sprawl across Yountville’s charming downtown.

Planes

International arrivals should fly into San Francisco or Oakland, which are both just a 90-minute drive from the hotel. Sacramento is slightly closer, and is your best bet for US domestic options – and private charters can land at nearby Napa County Airport (just 20 minutes from the hotel by car).

Automobiles

Public transport is hard to come by in these parts, so it’s worth sorting a set of wheels (and a designated driver) to really savour Napa’s world-renowned wineries. There’s private parking at the hotel, plus valet parking.

Worth getting out of bed for

The grape-laden vines of Napa Valley are within easy reach of the Estate Yountville – especially with the hotel’s e-bikes to borrow, so you could zip right to the trellis-covered doors of nearby wine-tasting rooms. Ask the concierge about their local winery partners, and seal the deal with discounts on an array of wine experiences at Jessup Cellars, Handwritten Wines, and Silver Trident Winery – all boutique producers specializing in handcrafted artisan labels. The Estate’s wine guides are also on hand to organize private vineyard treks around B Cellars, followed by barrel tasting and seated food tasting. Maps and custom audio tours of the Yountville Art Walk are available at reception, which walk and talk you through 35 large-scale works dotting the downtown. For an unforgettable Wine Country sunrise, take to the skies in a hot-air balloon ride and drink in the rolling vineyards from above.

Local restaurants

Yountville shines ever-so-brightly with Michelin stars, which is mostly thanks to the culinary talents of Thomas Keller – the mastermind behind three Michelin-starred the French Laundry, and easygoing Ad Hoc which elevates classic American comfort food in daily-changing dishes. Tables at the former are like gold dust, but if you magically manage to make a reservation, you’ll be in for a farm-fresh, locally foraged treat – including a fully vegetarian tasting menu which changes with the seasons. French country fare continues at Bistro Jeanty, a family-run restaurant which perfectly balances rustic with refined – save room for the cheese boards and desserts (the presentation is worthy of window display in the finest Parisian pâtisseries).

Local cafés

Completing Thomas Keller’s culinary trio, Bouchon Bakery is the go-to gathering spot for carbing up on artisan bread and buttery pastries (the ideal antidote to Napa’s legendary late nights). Sit in the tree-shaded courtyard and keep those croissants coming.

Local bars

With so many tasting rooms and cellars within strolling distance, the wine-bar scene tends to dominate Yountville. But you can always shake things up at Mexican eatery La Calenda, by sinking pineapple-spiked margaritas and tucking into Oaxacan-style beef tacos.

Every hotel featured is visited personally by members of our team, given the Smith seal of approval, and then anonymously reviewed. As soon as our reviewers have returned from this vineyard-encircled estate in Napa Valley and unpacked their cabernet sauvignon bottles and rustic table linens, a full account of their wine-guzzling break will be with you. In the meantime, to whet your wanderlust, here's a quick peek inside the Estate Yountville in California…

Treading a vine line between sprawling resort and more intimate stays, the Estate Yountville has created the perfect blend of big, bountiful, and boutique in its village-within-a-village setting. Two distinct (yet unmistakably California Wine Country in style) properties are connected by strollable, olive-scented walkways, with various wine cellars, an artisan marketplace, and Tuscan-esque spa in between. Hotel Villagio feels like the hip, cool, and occasionally moody younger sister, with its darker paint job, industrial metal details, and firelit stone spaces. Rooms have a rustic edge, with mahogany headboards, wooden floors, and hand-knotted textiles.

Vintage House tends to draw an older, more relaxed crowd, who spend easy-breezy days by the pool with oversized glasses of cabernet in hand. Whitewashed bungalows house high-ceilinged, beamed bedrooms, crackling fireplaces, and marble bathrooms. Long, leisurely vineyard tours and tastings are a must, and the small-town charms and foodie fanfare of nearby Yountville will soon beckon (where you can wine and dine your way through the highest Michelin-star concentration in the world).
