Setting

Sublime Saba shoreline

Away from the bustle of Denpasar’s gridlocked streets, Saba Estate switches on the serenity from a secluded stretch of black-sand beach along Bali’s quieter southeastern coast. With just six suites, service is personal without being overbearing and refined interiors are carefully considered to ensure views are especially scenic. Saba’s slumberous state is tough to pull yourself from, so we’d recommend just falling into its welcoming hands and heading straight for the spa, where traditional treatments and meditative massages await; sipping and dipping by the palm-fringed pool; or simply standing on its shores watching Balian surfers cut and carve in the silhouetted distance.

There’s a small thatched balé alongside the pool, where traditional Indonesian dishes (spicy roasted duck, and grilled ayam taliwang chicken) are expertly concocted by head chef Ketut Darma. There’s no bar at the hotel, but drinks from the restaurant menu can be delivered straight to your sunloungers.

Worth getting out of bed for

Bali’s verdant beauty surrounds Saba Estate, and you’re never far from its natural wonders. Visit Kemenuh Village on the Petanu River and swim under the famed cascades of the Tegenungan and Blangsinga waterfalls – adrenaline junkies may favour the latter for its 40-metre-high glass bridge that crosses the river. Head a little further south for the Hidden Canyon Beji Guwang, where local guides wait to take you on the trek up to the top of the falls. Wannabe surfers can learn to cut the waves at Gone Surfin’ School along Keramas Beach, or go horseback-riding along Saba Beach at sunset. If that all sounds a little too adventurous, spend the afternoon at the Sababay Winery for tours and tastings.

Stop off at family-run Warong Legong, a 10-minute drive from Saba Estate, where homemade Balinese eats are dished out in a humble dining room built around rice paddies. If you’re willing to make the hour's drive, the island’s famed Atlas Beach Club is along the southwestern coast, in Canggu.

Inside, just six spacious suites sit wrapped around the estate’s tropical gardens and beachside pool; interiors are modern with marbled accents, creatively crafted furnishings and floor-to-ceiling windows that make for stellar sunset views. Beyond basking poolside and tension-busting in the spa, the island’s famed beaches sit on your doorstep, waterfalls await your wading, and sunrise horse rides make for Instagram-worthy shots. Things sure do get scenic in Saba…
