Setting

Handsome Hinton Saint George

Welcoming travellers all the way since 1680, the Lord Poulett Arms in the scenic Somerset village of Hinton Saint George. The name has nothing to do with French fowl; rather, it’s a nod to the Hon Earl Poulett, and it’s actually pronounced ‘paullet’. He’s long since cleared out, anyway, handing the baton to two experts in food, flagstones and fireplaces, with cosy bedrooms to retire to after one too many Butcombe Brewery beers.

Top Table

For peak cosiness, opt for one of the tables for two by the fire, or request a fair-weather table out on the terrace.

Dress Code

Leave the sequins at home.

Hotel restaurant

This is Great British pub grub with a quick detour around the world: expect dishes to include trout spring rolls with soy and sesame dressing and compressed cucumber; rump of Mendip lamb with boulangère potatoes and spring leeks; tonka bean crème brûlée with pistachio ice-cream. The furniture has been sourced from antique markets all over the country, the mood lighting (care of candles and table lamps) is excellent, and there’s a fuzzy chatter filling the room and making it even more inviting.

Hotel bar

The pub and restaurant are open plan. Make time for a drink first so you can have a chat with the locals as you work your way through the craft beers on tap, most of which come from the nearby Butcombe Brewery.

Last orders

Breakfast is served from 8am until 9.30am, after which the pub stays open until 11pm (10.30pm on Sundays).

In the meantime, to whet your wanderlust, here's a quick peek inside the Lord Poulett Arms in Hinton Saint George

Forget the grandes dames of the hotel world: the Lord Poulett Arms is the grand daddy, welcoming weary travellers and offering them a place to lay their heads since 1680. Today, the duo behind the Beckford Arms and the Talbot Inn – both also pub-with-rooms perfection – are the custodians of Lord Poulett’s lair, and it’s as inviting as ever. Along with all the fireplaces, cosy corners and vaulted ceilings you could possibly hope for, there’s mismatched furniture a-go-go, thanks to the owners travelling far and wide to bring their newfound treasures to a room near you, with Berber rugs, local artworks and feature lamps filling in the blanks. The garden is split into three sections, with a Basque pelota wall and Provencal petanque court added for extra cultivation. It’s a casual affair, with check-in taking place over the bar counter (locally brewed beer, anyone?), but the Great British pub doesn’t get much better than this.
