Stone love

Antiqued Alcúdia Old Town

Style is set in stone at Hotel Can Mostatxins in the centre of Mallorca’s historic Alcudia Old Town. Built into a 15th-century one-time olive-oil presser, the hotel makes a feature of its original mason-built walls, lending a sense of history to each of its eight rooms and a dramatic setting for its grotto-like courtyard and Jacuzzi.

The hotel’s name, which is Mallorcan for moustache, was inspired by a butcher who owned the building in the early 1900s and was known for his remarkably well-styled upper-lip accoutrement. Keep an eye out for little moustache emblems throughout the space.

Our favourite rooms

All rooms have at least one original stone wall with beautiful exposed brick, but the Tower Suite is particularly exceptional. Set in the 15th-century tower, the two-floor Suite Room in the Tower is accessible by its own glass passageway, and has a private terrace overlooking the Jacuzzi. The upper level has views of the rooftops of Alcúdia and the distant mountains.

The one-room spa offers facials, massages and foot treatments using local products. Book ahead to guarantee availability.

Packing tips

Pack light and prepare to stuff your bags with bounty from Old Town Alcúdia’s fantastic bi-weekly market, with stalls selling leather bags, sandals, tunics and heaps of local delicacies, including olive oil, charcuterie and in-season citrus.

The hotel is wheelchair accessible, with a lift to all floors and one bedroom adapted for guests with mobility issues. However, there is a short step at the main entrance with which some guests may need assistance.

This is one for the grown-ups: no under-12s allowed.

Hotel Can Mostatxins is a 45-minute drive from Palma de Mallorca (or Son Sant Joan) Airport; fly there via EasyJet ( or British Airways ( The hotel can arrange transfers for up to four people (€75), though car rental is advisable for anyone looking to explore the best beaches and towns on the island.

Car hire is available at the airport, and is the best way to explore the beautiful coastline. Though there is no parking at the hotel, there are free car parks within a short walk.

Worth getting out of bed for

Start your day on top of the world, or at least the Roman wall surrounding tiny Alcudia. On Tuesdays and Sundays, the town hosts a grand market packed with seemingly unending stalls groaning with cured meats, fresh produce, leather goods and Spanish clothing. When you’ve completed the town tour, potter down to the beaches. Playa de Alcudia, south of town, is a 10-minute stroll away, and offers clear, calm waters and soft sands. The shallow waters make for excellent snorkelling and stand-up paddleboarding, and there are lounge chairs and umbrellas for hire.

Local restaurants

A short walk from the hotel, Osteria El Patio (+34 871 57 72 49) specialises in seafood pastas, best enjoyed on its bougainvillea-garlanded namesake patio. Take a break from tapas at Como En Casa (+34 971 54 90 33), just off the port on Carrer dels Pins. Ask for an outside table for pizzas topped with local cured meats and seafood. Tex-Mex may not sound entirely authentic off the Spanish coast, but Mama’s Gourmet (+34 971 54 90 28) west of the port serves juicy ribs, hulking burgers and top-notch grilled meats. Eat with your feet in the sand at locavore-loving Ponderosa Beach with a resident DJ and tables set on the beach, it feels a little like Ibiza and is a great place for a boozy lunch. Stay in Port de Pollenca has a view over the bay and does a fixed meny that changes every week. It’s worth the drive to the small village of Caimari, Mallorca, at the foothills of Serra de Tramuntana, to have dinner at Ca na Toneta (+34 971 515 226). Rooted in tradition and now run by the daughters of the former owner, this locavore restaurant dishes out strictly season Mallorcan fare.

As soon as our reviewers have returned from this refined hotel in Mallorca and unpacked their leather sandals and Catalan phrase books, a full account of their island luxury break will be with you. In the meantime, to whet your wanderlust, here's a quick peek inside Hotel Can Mostatxins in Alcudia Old Town…

Hipper than the handlebar moustache from which it takes its name, Hotel Can Mostatxins is a beacon of cool comfort in the centre of Alcudia Old Town. The 15th-century building has in the past been  an olive oil factory, a butcher’s shop (whose proprietor sported the moustache that inspired the hotel’s name) and even a town prison. These days, butchers and bandits make way for solace-seeking sojourners who converge on the historic Mallorcan enclave for sun, sea and a bit of Spanish shopping. The owners’ tasteful renovation pays tribute to the building’s history, adding sleek glass walkways and minimalist accents to the ancient stonework. Though the hotel doesn’t have sprawling grounds and hopping nightlife, there is plenty to please. In lieu of a swimming pool, a Jacuzzi sits at the base of the stone-enclosed courtyard, providing mediaeval surroundings for a rejuvenating dunk. Though the hotel doesn’t have a restaurant, its central location means plenty of tapas bars, cafés and restaurants within steps of the front door, and the hotel’s fully stocked honesty bar will take care of any cava cravings.

We loved

The Hotel Can Mostatxins hosts, Peter and Rudolph, made our stay a delight; they really could not have made us feel more welcome. The relaxed atmosphere and the outdoor jacuzzi were also a big hit with us. This is an ideal location from which to cycle and to enjoy what the island has to offer.

Don’t expect

Impersonal, 'run of the mill' hotel staples like 24 hr reception and room service.

We loved

The ambience of this beautiful hotel. The helpful, friendly mangers and staff. Being pampered on holiday. Holidays are not just about the surroundings, it's the overall experience, this hotel has it all. We are definitely going back after everybody made us feel part of the 'Can Molstatxins' family. Alcudia old town is lively at night and has many lovely restaurants to enjoy the many types of Spanish cuisine. 10/10

We loved

Peter and Rudolph's top notch hospitality, the gorgeous courtyard and convenient location for exploring the surrounding area. The hot stone massage in the hotel's lovely treatment room was also excellent. Top tip: definitely hire a car! The restaurants we tried in Alcudia itself were average but we loved The Wine Side down in the Port. Ponderosa Beach was perfect for a long lunch, and Ca Na Toneta is well worth a visit to sample the best of local produce (but beware the 90 euro round trip in a taxi).

To want to leave! We very rarely go back to the same place twice but I suspect this might be the exception, particularly given the ease of getting there from the UK for a long weekend.

After having spent a splendid day newly discovering Palma, Mrs Smith and I had begun to feel regret for not staying there longer. So when the taxi showed up for the transfer to Hotel Can Mostatxins it was admittedly with a heavy heart that we embarked on the next leg of the journey- this better be good.. ..It was more than good. Alcudia is a gem and there is no better place to base yourself than the Moustatxins. You are welcomed into the reception by Peter and Rudolph, pleased as punch over their creation. And rightly so, it's truly beautiful. How you excavate a ruin and turn it into a cool a boutique hotel, in an old town with streets barely wide enough to swing a cat is anyone's guess but excavate and transform they have. The "plunge pool area" is something else; indoor/ outdoor, light streaming in through the walls, evoking the Moorish past of the Island. Mrs Smith and I were lucky to get Room 9. If you can; do. It's like a little flat at the top of the building, with chairs outside to stair at the stars with a glass of cava, Estrella or whatever else takes your fancy from the honesty bar. Mrs S was making comparisons to the Roden Project, where the walls of the Moustatxins frame the stars in the sky like the structure in the Arizonan desert; Mr S was letting the side down with a string vest, shorts and a beer during this noble cultural chat. The food and character of Alucia is exceptional. "Jardin" already has one star, could be set for more on the basis of a fabulous night Peter arranged at the last minute. In fact, the chaps are awash with recommendations that we hadn't time to make, this time. The warm hospitality of Peter and Rudolph combined with their keen aesthetic sensibility made this short getaway, restorative, tranquil and magical, and this time it is with a very heavy heart that we head home.
