Our favourite rooms
All of Grand Joanne’s rooms share the same cosy-but-contemporary feel with earthy colours, statement carpets and soft lighting. For couples looking to maximise on hygge, the spacious Junior Suites have warm wooden accents and exposed brick walls. But if we had to choose one, it’d be room 101, which boasts one of the building’s only original stained-glass windows.
Spa
There’s no spa, but Grand Joanne partners with Aire Ancient Baths in nearby Carlsberg City. Inspired by the baths of ancient civilizations, this former brewery has been transformed into a romantic relaxation spot with vaulted thermal pools and soul-soothing treatment rooms. Though you’ll find signs of its former life in the spa menu, which includes traditional soaks in Danish beer alongside more conventional treatments.

Hotel restaurant
Joanne’s namesake all-day-dining spot is a casual, lounge-like space where terrazzo tables, zig-zag-tiled flooring and curvy furnishings set the scene for hearty breakfasts (freshly baked pastries, good-for-you smoothie bowls and spicy ‘nduja shakshuka..) and Italian-inspired lunches. Come evening, the menu gets global: small plates such as Spanish-style padrón peppers followed up with all-American hamburgers.
Hotel bar
Joanne’s bar, in the main dining space, is the feel-good hub of this trendsetting stay, where you’ll find guests and locals mingling over natural wines and local brews. The cocktail list – inspired by top-of-the-pops hits – features concoctions like ‘Hot stuff’ (Copenhagen Distillery’s peppery aquavit, tomato, spices lemon) and ‘Heard it through the grapevine’ (Nordic amaro, grapes and fizz). Expect a moodier atmosphere at Pinden, a tribute to Denmark’s classic bodega bars where you can pair cold beers with handmade pies, or survey the city from above at the leafy roof terrace bar.
Last orders
Pinden is open Wednesday, Thursday and Sunday from 4pm to midnight, and Friday and Saturday between 3pm and 2am. Joanne, meanwhile, runs from 7am to 11pm daily.

Planes
Copenhagen International Airport is a 20-minute drive away and transfers can be arranged starting from DKK1,100 each way. Alternatively, there are direct trains to Copenhagen Central, and Metro routes, which each take around 25 minutes.
Trains
Copenhagen’s grand Central Station is just 200 metres from the hotel with direct routes to Aarhus, Malmö, Stockholm and beyond.
Automobiles
There’s public parking available close to the hotel, though you’re unlikely to need wheels – this being Scandinavia, you can bet on like-clockwork public transport.
Worth getting out of bed for
Experience the city like a local – that is, on two wheels – with the hotel’s fleet of bikes. Start nearby at the Meatpacking District’s Fotografisk Center, a space dedicated to camera- work, before heading central for a jaunt round the Danish Architecture Center, a museum which focuses on how people are shaped by the urban environment. Further north, the Design Museum Denmarktraces an aesthetic history from the 1920s to now; while across the canal, industrial Refshaleøen bustles with grass-roots creativity. Visit Copenhagen Contemporary for up-to-the-minute installation art, or top-up your vitamin D at Reffen, a sprawling outdoor complex of street-food stalls and shack-style bars open during the warmer months. Keep an eye out for their rotating run of events: art shows, workshops,DJs and live music. Back in the centre of town, Magasin is a nostalgic department store where you can find Nordic staples from Saks Potts and Stine Goya to Ganni and Gestuz, alongside Scandinavian beauty bits and a delightfully large chocolate section. Its grand French Renaissance Revival building is pretty impressive, too, formerly the Hotel du Nord where Hans Christian Andersen boarded for the best part of a decade. Finally, take a train north to Humlebæk (Copenhagen Central is on your doorstep, after all), where Louisiana pairs modern art, mid-century architecture and wow-worthy views of the dramatic Øresund Sound

Set in a former butcher’s shop in Vesterbro’s happening Meatpacking district, Kødbyens Fiskebar is a no-brainer for seafood lovers. Carnivores, however, can indulge in barbecue heaven at Warpigs, a stripped-back canteen-cum-beerhall with a sauce-slathered menu of smoked meats, 22 house brews on tap, and a soundtrack of rock ’n’ roll classics. As for veggies, Delphine’s Mediterranean-inspired menu of grilled-veg skewers, heaped Greek salads and mezze spreads is sure to please.
Local cafés
With minimalist interiors lit by hanging pendant lamps, creamy lattes, and pastries so pretty you’ll want to mount them on the wall, Mad & Kaffe on leafy Sønder Boulevard is a one-stop-shop for all things sweet and caffeinated.
Local bars
Mikkeller Bar is an industrial-chic basement bar in the middle of Vesterbro with a rotating cast of locally-brewed beers on tap. Think of it as Warpigs’ low-key little sister. For cocktail lovers,Lidkoeb is a blink-and-you’ll-miss it bar spread across three floors of a former apothecary. Whisky (and whiskey) enthusiasts should make a beeline for the bar’s dram-dedicated third floor, where tastings are hosted each Friday and Saturday evening.
