Setting

Adirondack adventureland

Cool, calm and collected Eastwind Lake Placid is an all-American motor lodge in the Adirondacks, Upstate New York. The protected parkland spans a supersize 5,000 square miles of mountains, forests and lakes, with trails to hike and slopes to ski. You have glaciation to thank for this natural masterpiece – for man-made interventions, downtown Lake Placid is within walking distance. This is also where to live out all your fly-fishing fantasies (even if we can’t promise Robert Redford and Brad Pitt).

Our favourite rooms

For novelty value, book one of Eastwind Lake Placid’s Lushna cabins, which were imported from Slovenia and assembled here in the Adirondacks – this way, camping comes with king-size beds, as well as your own deck for kumbaya riffs (which is just as well, since they look like miniature wooden churches).

Planes

The region is served by an airport in the town of Saranac Lake, which has daily flights to and from Boston and New York City. Taxi-hailing apps can be used to make the 25-minute journey to the hotel.

Automobiles

The hotel is within walking distance of the nearest town, but you’ll need a car to see more of this wholesome all-American playground – there’s free parking on-site.

Worth getting out of bed for

Eastwind Lake Placid is within walking distance of the namesake town, 15 minutes away from a ski resort and close to heavenly hiking trails – in other words, it’s an all-American pastoral playground. In fact, it’s such a winter wonderland that it hosted the Winter Olympics in 1980. If you do want to head indoors, seek shelter at the Lake Placid Center for the Arts, at John Brown’s farmhouse or at the Lake Placid and North Elba history museum. As well as skiing and hiking, you’ll be able to hire boats, charter dog-sleds and go fly-fishing; and if you’re here for the chairs (and not just Adirondack ones), head to Dartbrook Rustic Goods to shop and worry about shipping later. Spectacular hikes include up to High Falls Gorge, the Mount Jo Trail, to Cascade Falls and the Cobble Lookout Trailhead.

Local restaurants

A 15-minute drive north of Eastwind Lake Placid and on the banks of the Ausable River, the aptly named Hungry Trout is precisely where to go fly-fishing and fish-eating – yes, there is an entire section of the menu dedicated to types of trout. If you’ve come to Keene in search of furniture, stick around for some sustenance at Forty Six (unless it’s a Wednesday or Thursday, when it’ll be closed). Or for all-American (read: meat-mad) barbecue, make for Smoke Signals on Main Street in downtown Lake Placid. More comfort food awaits at Dack Shack.

Local cafés

All of your cake needs will be met at Bluesberry Bakery on Main Street in town; and they can be supplemented with deli goods and pantry items at Cedar Run Bakery & Market.

Local bars

For the best IPA in town and daily-changing beers on tap, Big Slide is the brewery for you; and more creative uses of hops await at the Great Adirondack Brewing Company.

Anonymous review

Every hotel featured is visited personally by members of our team, given the Smith seal of approval, and then anonymously reviewed. As soon as our reviewers have returned from this boutique hotel in Upstate New York and unpacked their farmers’ market finds and maple syrup, a full account of their bucolic break will be with you. In the meantime, to whet your wanderlust, here's a quick peek inside Eastwind Lake Placid…

Adirondack may have previously meant a type of chair to you, but for Americans, it means mountains, forests, lakes and even waterfalls, in one of the largest areas of protected parkland in the country (the massif covers an, er, massive 5,000 square miles). It’s in Upstate New York – but if you think that means it’s close to Manhattan, think again. It’s 300 miles away, although as Bill Bryson famously once pointed out, Americans would drive that distance for a taco (A40 quick Cotswolds corridor, this is not). New Yorkers can swap the five-hour drive time for a 40-minute flight, though.

The bucolic backdrop to the cabins and rooms at Eastwind Lake Placid is provided courtesy of sugar maple, American beech and yellow birch trees. There’s a fire-pit for communal sing-songs and s’mores, a library and lounge, and an events programme to (almost) rival the big city. Fishing rods at the ready – it’s time for an all-American adventure.
