Laidback Isla Holbox rests on the north coast of the Yucatán Peninsula in Mexico. Horizontally minded, this is a place for idling and relaxation, where you’ll be lulled by sea breezes and a backdrop of cyan waters and swaying palms. Here, the six-key, adults-only boutique hotel Casa Muuch has a private-residence feel, offering a range of rooms, some of which have their own plunge-pool and rooftop terrace. For larger groups, there’s also the option of an exclusive buy-out of the property. While there’s no official restaurant, the hotel’s on-site private chef can whip up your breakfast – eggs any-way, tropical-fruit plates and more – and there’s a barbecue to fire up on the communal terrace. The petite property has a crochet-sandalled foot firmly placed in the island’s bohemian style, but with a minimalist bent: wicker and wood pieces, plus local handicrafts, stand out against neutral tones, while stonework adds character naturally. Common areas are limited but comfortable; take-five in the lounge’s hanging-egg chair or head out to the terrace for alfresco meals and a swim in the shared pool. During the day, you can cycle or kayak about, or stroll along the beach, which is just inches from the hotel, pausing for a refreshing coconut when the sun starts to beat down.
