Six-bedroom Hillside Cottage impresses with classic British-countryside features – think log-burning fireplaces, reclaimed-wood furnishings, farmhouse-style cabinets and sweeping views of hilly horizons. But a few steps beyond the fig-tree-lined gardens out front, a stable-style dwelling houses a private sauna and steam room, fronted by a view-graced outdoor hot tub and plunge pool. And, just a little further downhill, the Trailhead Cabin has a bar area, kitchenette, dart-board, games to play and a fire-pit-warmed patio. Throw in the spa’s trio of treatment rooms down the drive and you’re unlikely to venture too much further afield, but if you’re following trails on the plains, walking sticks and Barbour jackets await your donning, or those seeking accolade-winning dishes can head across the road to the Three Daggers pub for hearty fry-ups, pan-fried favourites and Sunday roasts.

First Glance

  • This six-bedroom cottage sits on the hillside overlooking western Wiltshire’s rolling plains and sleeps up to 12.
  • Cedar-wood exteriors are flanked by a cobblestone garden with blooming fig and apple trees, and steps lead up the hill to the cottage’s two outhouses.
  • Inside, natural tones and floral wallpapers are paired with restored wooden floors and antique furnishings that add to the building’s cosy countryside feel.
  • Facing the hills, the fully-equipped kitchen (including a Nespresso coffee machine, tea-making kit, range cooker, fridge, dishwasher and crockery) is bright and spacious, furnished with a view-facing banquette, reclaimed-wood dining table and grooved maroon cabinets. At the end of the kitchen, French doors lead to a private patio.
  • The ground floor also houses a living room with a wood-burning fireplace, sofas, board games and a TV, and two bedrooms with ensuite bathrooms.
  • Upstairs, there are four more bedrooms each with their own ensuite bathroom and neutral hues.
  • Up a short cobbled path, you’ll find the Trailhead Cabin, a small outhouse with a kitchenette, bar area, dart-board and furnished patio.
  • Just above the cabin, an outdoor hot tub and plunge pool face the hills, and the sauna and steam room reside in a converted stable behind.

Grounds

  • As its name suggests, the cottage is set on Wiltshire's hillside with a spacious private garden out front lined with apple and fig trees, and cobbled paths, and has a number of hill-facing patios with fire pits and wooden chairs.
  • Walking trails abound here, and there’s a booklet in your cottage with recommended trails in the area.
  • Pups are welcome to join you, just let the cottage know in advance.
  • Please note that narrow staircases and a steep entrance makes the cottage difficult for those with reduced mobility.

Location

  • Hillside Cottage is located in Edington, a small village northeast of Westbury in Wiltshire on the northern slope of Salisbury Plain.
  • From London, Edington is around a two-hour drive southwest along the M3 and A303, 25 minutes from Stonehenge.
  • To get to Edington on the train, take a Great Western Rail service towards Castle Cary and get off at Westbury. From there, it’s a 10-minute drive to Hillside Cottage. Taxis can be a little sparse at the station, so you can also take the 87 bus to Devizes and get off at the Old Schoolhouse – a one-minute walk from the cottage.
  • The Three Daggers pub is located across the road from the cottage, and next door you’ll also find their farm shop with local produce and all the essentials.
