Colombia’s most caffeinated region might not sound the most relaxing, but at luxury villa Finca Quindío there’s plenty of time for a more laidback way of living to percolate. It’s set amid the kind of primordial verdure that immerses you in soothing greens, with meandering pathways into dense jungle – leading to a tucked away pool and yoga pavilion – and trill birdsong. You might also hear some moos or neighs, and you’re not going mad, because there’s a farm, orchards and horse paddocks onsite, too. And, while beans are the big deal here, your Asian-inflected terracotta-roofed abode feels like a Japanese tea-house, with sliding paper screen doors and an interior courtyard garden, with Colombian craftworks to add local colour to this most Zen of dens.

With Finca Quindio’s buildings’ low, gabled, terracotta-tiled roofs; leafy surrounds; sliding paper-screen doors and natural materials, the hideaway bears a resemblance to a Japanese tea house, but with a distinct Colombian countryside look. Colours are pared back, and polished teak wood, leather, stone, and locally made ceramics and textiles are used throughout.
The living space is open to this peaceful rural idyll, with a sea of green outdoors, and the sounds of lowing cattle and birdsong. Within, it’s wood up to the rafters, with comfy sofas and rug-topped stone flooring.

Sleeps up to eight guests in four bedrooms.
The master bedroom is 30sq m, with a private furnished terrace, woven hammock and woodland views. Indoors, there’s a bamboo roof, four-poster king-size bed swathed in mosquito netting, and an ensuite bathroom which opens up to the garden with a walk-in rainfall shower.

Set down a grassy slope at the foot of the garden, just before you hit a leafy wall, is the slender, geometrically shaped, 18-meter freshwater pool with a stepped entrance and cobbled sides, plus deckchairs, loungers and a parasol-shaded table.

Rambling riotously green grounds fringed with jungle and mature trees and criss-crossed with small paved pathways. Wander out and you’ll find a farm with cows, horse paddocks and fragrant citrus groves.

Follow the teeny wooden bridge into the jungle and you’ll find a secluded pavilion (and second yoga deck) with cushions and skins to sit on.

The villa is in a remote, lushly green swathe of Quindío, part of Colombia’s fertile coffee-growing axis, where dedication to the bean is so serious it’s been granted Unesco World Heritage status and is home to the National Coffee Park. So, you best believe you’ll get one damn fine cup of coffee here.
The closest airport is Armenia’s El Edén International, an hour’s drive from the villa. It’s a short flight from both Bogotá and Medellín, but also has direct links to Fort Lauderdale and Panama City. Alternatively, Pereira Airport, a two-hour drive away, has routes between New York and Miami too. Transfers from Armenia are included in the rental rate; those from Pereira are US$200 one-way.
Charming multicoloured municipality Montenegro is a 35-minute drive from the villa’s estate.
There’s plenty to do in the area: caffeinate then take the edge off (or on) with coffee- or wine-tasting, hike the Cocora Valley and other rural routes, or hop on horseback. Or maybe even help to milk the cows onsite.
For a meal offsite, try pretty nearby towns Salento and Filandia; at the latter, Helena Adentro is popular for its packed sandwiches (such as the chorizo baguette with chimichurri, caramelised onion and mustard), gyros, yucca croquettes and fudgy brownies.
