Indulge in lusty mediaeval feasts in the banqueting hall (there’s a chef to call on); hold Regency-style fireside salons in antique-laden sitting rooms; and revel in the more modern additions of a heated pool, hot tub and spa. Coombe End started out as a monastery in the 15th century, but piety has since given way to partying (book the whole place and up to 22 can join in the fun) and romantic village-hopping weekenders. So, ditch the mundane and be reborn to the manor.

  • There are layers of history to the decor stretching back to the manor’s 15th-century beginnings, but in spirit it most strongly identifies as Regency, with bow windows, judiciously chosen antiques, throwback portraiture, working fireplaces, profuse patterns, thick rugs, and deep-filled sofas – all the better for gossiping on.
  • Grand front porch designed by architect Sir Edward Lutyens.
  • A breakfast room, morning room, dining room and snug on the ground floor and a drawing room on the first floor. There are three honesty bars, which guests can stock themselves or they can buy fro the Manor's cellar.
  • Mediaeval banqueting hall with seating for up to 22, a large working fireplace, wood ceiling beams and stone walls.
  • Shaker-style Cotswolds kitchen. All meals are planned in advance of your stay and menus are tailored to you on request (for an extra charge), from breakfast to afternoon tea and special-occasion dinners.
  • There's a club room with a pool table, darts and a flatscreen TV in the friary wing, and a gym for over-16s with weights, a treadmill and a Hydrow rowing machine.

  • Sleeps up to 22 guests (20 comfortably) in nine individually designed bedrooms.
  • Bedrooms vary by hue and pattern, and whichever antique furnishings could be acquired, but all have a sumptuous classic look, plump headboards, plentiful pattern cosy rugs and a double bed (except for the twin room).
  • On the first floor, there’s the Garden Room, Pink Room, Blue Room, Orange Room and Chinese Room. The second floor houses the Train Room, North Room, Anne's Room, Green Room, South Room and Twin Room.
  • The Garden Room, Pink Room and North Room all have an ensuite with a walk-in shower and bath tub; the Train Room has an in-room freestanding bath tub; the Blue Room, Orange Room and Chinese Room have bathrooms with bath tubs (the Chinese Rooms bathroom is across the corridor and the other two are ensuites); the Green Room and Anne's room both have an ensuite with a walk-in shower; the South Room and Twin Room share a bathroom with a combined shower and bath tub.
  • There's also a small additional twin room in the friary wing.

Location

  • The manor is a 20-minute drive from both Cheltenham (for the racecourse, annual literary festival and Regency splendour) and Cirencester (for ancient Roman artefacts and monuments, the sculpture park and quaint indie boutiques).
  • It’s easy to reach the manor from London by train; direct services run from Paddington to Cheltenham Spa (a two-hour journey) or to Kemble (a short drive from Cirencester) in just over an hour. Or you can connect from Bristol to the west.
  • If you’re driving from central London, the journey will take around two hours via the M4; you’ll get a taste of the scenery to come passing through the North Essex Downs along the way. There’s ample parking onsite.
  • If you’re flying in, London Heathrow is the closest of the capital’s four international hubs (around a 90-minute drive away). Or fly into Birmingham Airport, which is well connected with countries around the world. The manor owners can help with transfers on request. And, if you’d like to charter a private flight or helicopter ride, then you can touch down in the Manor grounds.
  • A mile’s walk away, you’ll find a farm shop and Elkstone Studios wellness centre.
  • There’s plenty to do in the surroundings. Watch matches or book private lessons at Cirencester Park or Beaufort polo clubs, get to grips with birds of prey at John Dowling Falconry, stop by Gloucester Cathedral, and be charmed by Southrop Village. If you’re getting a taste for the finer homes in life, then Woodchester Mansion and Sheepscombe House will be to your liking, and Kingham Village has the delectable Bamford spa. Flyup Downhill arranges thrilling mountain bike adventures, the Cotswold Water Park offers aquatic fun, and the Cotswold Gliding Club will let you see the leafy region from 3,000 feet up in the air. Keep your eyes peeled for cooler-than-your-average Giffords Circus who tour the Cotswolds through summer and autumn. And every Saturday, there’s street food and fresh produce at Stroud Farmers’ Market.
  • Dining options are legion too. Say, the Kitchen café and tea room in Stroud, Hobbs House Bakery for breads of all sorts and tray bakes, the Woolpack in Slad for an elevated pub lunch, Italian-style eats at Quayles bistro in Tetbury, or the Jolly Nice farm shop for toasties and ice-cream in a picnicking meadow. For dinner, there’s comforting grub at the Royal Oak Tetbury.
  • Thirsty? (For alcohol, that is…) We’ve got you covered – hit Sixteen Ridges and Woodchester Valley vineyards, Sibling Distillery in Cheltenham and Stroud Brewery.
