Bovey Castle might lord it up in Dartmoor National Park with its historic sprawl of gables and wings, but maybe m’lud and m’lady would like something a little cosier? Tucked away in the woodland by the country estate’s manicured lawns, lake and tennis courts, are 22 luxurious lodges. Each feels like the grand main residence after a blast with a shrink ray, having been built of the same local granite and vaulted with English oak beams. But there’s space for all the family (or some respite-seeking friends) over three storeys, all set for idyllic pastoral scenes: huddling in blankets by a crackling fire, summer barbecues on the deck, pulling on wellies and waxed jackets for a ramble. And Bovey Castle’s best bits are at your service – so you can easily switch between grandeur and cosiness.

  • 22 luxurious lodges (each around 110sq m in size) tucked away in the trees on Bovey Castle’s expansive country estate, beside the lake and tennis court.
  • Each lodge has an open-plan living and dining space and kitchen (either on the ground or first floor).
  • The fully-fitted kitchen has a Belfast sink, cooker, fridge, freezer, microwave, dishwasher and crockery, glassware, cutlery and kitchen utensils.
  • The living room has a gas fireplace.
  • All are laid out over three floors.
  • Guests are welcome to use Bovey Castle’s facilities, including the indoor swimming pool (children can swim from 9am to 5pm and must be supervised), whirlpool, sauna, steam room, gym and tennis courts. And kids staying can use the play area with swings, a slide and trampoline, join in the daily egg collecting, see the falconry display and visit the hotel’s ferrets for free. Other activities, such as using the golf course are charged.
  • During school holidays, the kids’ club is a life-saver and if it’s booked up when you get there, you might be devastated. Call ahead at all costs. Babysitters need to be booked at least two days in advance.
  • Laundry room with a washer and dryer.
  • The hotel have a range of dining packages they can send over (for an extra charge), including having your pantry filled before arrival, breakfast and barbecue hampers delivered to your door, a gourmet larder with local delicacies, family-style feasting, date-night dinners, classic takeaways and pre-arrival drinks packages. Dining orders must be made by 6pm the night before.
  • Lodges aren’t best suited to guests with mobility issues, but there’s one with an access ramp and parking space.

  • Each lodge has three bedrooms, either one on the second floor and two on the ground floor or one on each floor.
  • All bedrooms have an ensuite bathroom.
  • Lodges sleep up to eight (a maximum of six in the bedrooms and two children in extra beds). Extra beds or baby cots are £20 a person, each night.
  • Dogs can stay too for £25 a night, including bedding and a bowl (cages are available on request). Please note, they must be kept on a lead in the grounds and the hotel’s main restaurant and lounges are off limits, but you can hang with your pooch in the Cathedral Room.

  • Bovey Castle and its lodges sit within the boundaries of ravishingly beautiful Dartmoor National Park in Devon. It’s in the northeast of the park, near the tiny town of Moretonhampstead, which is notable for having the longest one-word place name in England. The lodges themselves are hidden in the trees on the estate, close to the lake, play area and tennis courts.
  • The nearest airport is Exeter International (www.exeter-airport.co.uk), a 45-minute drive away.
  • Exeter St Davids train station is a 40-minute drive away. You can reach Exeter St Davids in just over two hours from Paddington with First Great Western, or in three-and-a-half hours from Waterloo with South West trains.
  • The hotel is easy to get to from the M5 - it’s about a 30-minute drive once you exit the motorway. If you’ve got a SatNav, the postcode may throw you off-course, so enter ‘Bovey Castle Golf Course’ instead. Guests can unload their car at the lodge and use the main carpark. If you want to hire a car from Exeter, Thrifty and Avis have offices near the train station and Europcar is at the airport.
