It’s easy to overuse the phrase ‘get away from it all’, but for Scrubby Bay – a rustic,  cedar-clad bungalow on an isolated stretch of the Annandale estate – the description seems more than fitting. Nestled between rolling hills at the mouth of a private bay with views for miles across the Pacific, this farm-style refuge feels authentic and homespun, but has all the mod cons you’d expect of a luxury stay: a heated pool, chrome-accented kitchen and thumping sound system (in case you’d like a change from nature’s soundtrack of twittering birds and lapping waves). Contemporary interiors are cast in natural, untreated wood, and flickering flames – both in the huge stone chimney and outdoor fire pit – add warmth and cosiness. When the views are like this, you’d hate to miss them for a second; floor-to-ceiling windows across the sea-facing side of the house (including the bathrooms – wave-gazing soak, anyone?) mean you won’t have to.

First Glance

  • A rustic and sleekly-furnished bungalow, four-bedroom Scrubby Bay (448sq m) faces a private pebble beach, surrounded on both sides by verdant hills. There’s a jacuzzi, a pool, and a deck with views of the Pacific Ocean.
  • The open-plan living and dining room is oak-clad, with an enormous stone fireplace in the centre. On one side of the fireplace, two wooden tables and several chairs are set up for dining; wooden bookshelves – well-stocked with novels and games – line the walls. In the living area, an oversized, caramel-coloured corner sofa takes up most of the room, and faces the floor-to-ceiling glass doors covering the entire back wall. These open onto the deck, which leads down to the private bay.
  • The kitchen (at the back of the living room) has a wooden breakfast bar, surrounded by modern, leather-and-steel stools. Appliances include an oven, hob, grill, microwave, dishwasher, sink, washing machine, fully-stocked minibar, kettle and Nespresso coffee-making machine.
  • There’s a pantry situated next to the kitchen, plus a laundry room and a powder room across the hallway.

Sleeping arrangements

  • Scrubby Bay has four bedrooms, all with ensuite bathrooms. Three of these rooms are ocean-facing, and their ensuite, cedar-accented bathrooms have a walk-in shower, a freestanding bath tub and Nellie Tier bath products. The fourth room faces away from the ocean, and the bathroom has a walk-in shower.
  • The three Pacific-side rooms are, like the rest of the house, wood-clad and contemporary in design. Each has a king-size bed dressed in white linens, and two armchairs facing the floor-to-ceiling window. Each room’s ensuite bathroom also has a large window by the bath tub, for simultaneous soaking and sea-gazing.
  • The fourth bedroom is a dormitory, with four sets of bunk beds (one in each corner); a large window at the back of the room looks out over the private pool.

Poolside

  • Behind a glass balustrade at the back of the house is the heated pool, surrounded by wooden decking and the lush farmland beyond.
  • A jacuzzi sits at the front of the house, at the end of the deck, facing the ocean.

Grounds

  • Located in a remote, private spot, Scrubby Bay’s guests can enjoy the miles of rural New Zealand landscape just beyond its walls.
  • The house’s front deck has an open fire and several armchairs for alfresco lounging; a wooden jetty leads to the jacuzzi across the lawn.

Location

  • Scrubby Bay is part of the Annandale estate farm on the Banks Peninsula, a rocky headland facing the Pacific Ocean. Populated only by the odd grazing herd of cattle, this remote, postcard-worthy setting – rugged cliffs, secluded coves and rolling hills – is accessible only by helicopter or a four-wheel drive.
  • Christchurch International Airport is the closest, around an hour’s drive from the estate. Private transfers are available from NZ$325 each way. It’s also possible to reach the estate by helicopter (prices start at NZ$825 one-way). Call the Smith24 Team for more details.
  • Christchurch train station is well-served by Coastal Pacific and TranzAlpine railways; regular trains arrive from several major towns and cities, including Blenheim, Seddon and Kaikoura.
  • The 4,000-acre estate is a working farm; guests can take tours of the land (if you’re lucky, you might catch the sheep shearing), and hike (or bike) the on-site, 14km Pigeon Bay walkway. Kayaking or nature cruises on the bay will delight wildlife-watchers, who will be able to spot dolphins, fur seals, blue penguins and bird colonies. On lazier days, take a private class with the Annandale chef to hone your Kiwi cooking skills.
