Named for the Rosselli family’s heir, these rooms are more youthful in feel, playing with texture, colour and pattern: wood veneers, richly hued paints, velvet-upholstered furnishings… They’re colourful and chic, with a snoozably soft double bed and a bathroom with a shower or bath tub, plus speakers piping music in. Each room has a Smart LCD TV, USB charging ports, an espresso machine, tea-making kit, minibar, laptop safe, slippers and flip-flops, air-conditioning, bathrobes and all the bath kit you could need (his ‘n’ hers L’Occitane products, toothbrush, shaving kit…). There’s free WiFi too, and some rooms have a traditional gallarija (enclosed balcony).

A mezza croce is a half cross, awarded to donees to the Order of St John. As part of this esteemed club, Pietro Rosselli bore his proudly, so these rooms are named for the honour. More feminine in feel, these four rooms pay homage to Alusietta Massa, who helped to join two powerful families in her marriage to Don Pietro (not to mention bumping up his considerable fortune with her dowry). There’s a soft double bed and a lounge area, and walls are lined with the hotel’s custom bold chintz, made all the more dramatic with sultry hues and geometric furnishings. The lightest, brightest rooms in the hotel – named for the master of the house – all four are lined with grey-veined white Carrara marble, stucco and polished walnut wood. Set on the original piano nobile floor, these double-height rooms have large windows with city views. Named after the Pietro family crest, they’re perhaps the most eye-catching rooms, too, with coloured-marble mosaic flooring, custom wallpaper imprinted with golden hot-air-balloons, pendant lights and a black spiral staircase leading up to the bedroom, with a soft double bed, on the mezzanine level. There’s a lounge on the lower level with a green-velvet-upholstered sofa, a modern bathroom with a walk-in shower and speakers, and some suites have a traditional gallarija balcony too. In this ground-floor suite you get a sense of the hotel’s past, the vaulted living-dining room (which doubles up as a meeting room) is part of the original building given a lick of paint, and brought up to date with sleek modern furnishings. It’s a bit of a romantic too – 1634 is the year former owners and Maltese nobility Pietro and Alusietta Rosselli were married – the bedroom is set away from the lounge, up a flight of small stairs, and has a comfortable double bed, a gallarija balcony and an ensuite bathroom with a walk-in shower and speakers.
