At QT Falls Creek, it doesn’t matter if your idea of an alpine adventure involves dare-devil thrills or hot tubs, hot dogs and hot chocolate – you’ll be in High Country heaven, either way. In winter, the hotel is the happening heart of Falls Creek village; in summer, it’s a quieter, sunnier proposition, perfect for scenic seductions.

More details

QT Falls Creek needs to build a bigger awards cabinet – it was the proud recipient of Luxury Travel Magazine’s gong for Best Ski Property in both 2013 and 2014.

Hotel closed

QT Falls Creek is open year-round, but during ‘green season’, the bar and spa close and the restaurant only serves breakfast and lunch.

At the hotel

Spa (closed in summer), steam room and sauna. In rooms: iPod dock, WiFi (and, in winter, minibars). Most rooms have a TV and a hot tub; all rooms have a drying room with a cage for skis, boards and boots. Each room also has a kitchenette with a hob, microwave, pots and pans, sink and dishwasher, so you can easily rustle up your own meals.

Our favourite rooms

For the best valley views, opt for a room in the East Tower (E505 and E506, on the lofty fifth floor, have the best views). If you want to curl up by your own fireplace and you're coming with a gang (or want to spread out), opt for Two-Bedroom Penthouse E306, which also has covetable designer furniture, a glittering chandelier, a large dining table and a valley-surveying balcony with a particularly roomy Jacuzzi tub.

The heated pool is on the second floor, overlooking the valley. It’s a petite proposition, at around 5m long and waist-deep, with a Perspex wall that gives the pool a fish-tank feel. Just outside, there’s a cold plunge pool (expect to emit a short, sharp scream if you hop in here from the steam room and sauna).

Packing tips

Leave bed socks at home: rooms have deliciously toe-warming underfloor heating, so you can pad around barefoot and still feel toasty. Don’t overdo it when packing your bath products – each bathroom has a pretty vase stuffed with a plethora of fragrant lotions and potions.

Relieve post-ski aches and pains with a massage at SpaQ in the West Tower, where nimble-knuckled masseurs apply Uspa products to suppliant guests in one of three treatment rooms. Alternatively, try an aromatherapy treatment, wrap or facial.

Little Smiths are welcome. Cots are free for under-3s; under-13s can bunker down in an extra bed (added to rooms at no extra cost). The restaurant has a menu tailored to tots.

Food and drink

Hotel Restaurant

Bazaar restaurant has live cooking stations and relaxed styling: QT's typically oddball light fittings and a dark and moody palette tempered with bright splashes of colour. Pick something spicy from the Asian cooking station, heap your plate with salads from the buffet or try one of the warming slow-cooked stews.

Hotel Bar

Stingray Bar, open during peak season, sits opposite Bazaar, overlooking the square and the slopes (perfect for skier-watching), with gem-bright furniture and decks for DJs. If you want to nibble on something with your cocktails, order a selection of Mexico-inspired small plates.

Last orders

During peak season, breakfast is served between 7am and 10am; lunch is 12pm–2pm and dinner is dished up from 6pm until 9pm. In summer, Bazaar restaurant only serves breakfast and lunch. When Stingray is open, you can get a drink until around 10pm.

Room service

None, but rooms are stocked with minibars in winter.

Smith Insider

Dress code

Warm woollens for winter; relaxed duds for summer. Add some punchy accents – hot-pink/aqua tie or Perspex jewellery, perhaps – to match QT’s anti-wallflower decor.

Top table

Sit in the cosy corner closest to the deck and the stairs, in front of the pair of vintage skis and the window-seat stuffed with oversized cushions. To spy on alpine adventurers, stake out a table on the deck, which surveys Slalom Square Plaza.

Eat, drink, see, do: local favourites and more…

Worth getting out of bed for

Keen skiers will be delighted to see that the nearest ski lift is just 25m from the hotel, so it’s an easy hop up to the top of the mountain. In summer months, borrow mountain bikes or go horse riding with Bogong Horseback Adventures. Slalom Square is buzzing in peak season: explore its boutiques, bars and restaurants. (QT Falls Creek has a hot-dog stand in the Square called Kran-Skis; grab a dog or two.) Grass tennis courts are located in the Village Bowl, next to the Falls Creek Ski Lifts Office (court-hire costs $10 an hour).

Local restaurants

If you’re a fan of juicy steaks (there are good veggie options, too), have a meal at Falls Creek Country Club’s restaurant (; +61 (0)3 5758 3391). Kids are very welcome, and have their own menu to choose from; it’s a popular spot, especially in peak season, so book your table. Max’s is open all-year round and serves hearty modern Australian food that’s definitely best enjoyed after a long ski or ramble – veal shank with polenta, chicken parmigiana and the like (; +61 (0)3 5758 3347). There’s a special selection for little Smiths, too. The cosy dining room is a short stroll from the hotel, at 27 Falls Creek Road (next to Eagle Chairlift).

Vertiginous village

QT Falls Creek

17 Bogong High Plains Road, Falls Creek, Victoria 3699, Australia

QT Falls Creek sits right at the handsome heart of diminutive Falls Creek village, above the main road that snakes its way around the mountains. Keen skiers will be glad to know that the closest ski lift is just 25m away.

Albury Airport is 124km from the hotel (a two-hour drive), with regular domestic connections to Sydney and Melbourne offered by Qantas and Virgin Australia (

Mount Beauty is the closest town, half an hour away by car. From Melbourne, it’s a five-and-a-half hour drive on the Great Alpine Road, which offers breathtakingly beautiful views. You’ll want to do the drive in the day; firstly to appreciate the scenery, and secondly as the hairpin turns and switchbacks will test even the most confident of drivers, especially in snowy or wet conditions. On your way, stop off in Bright for lunch. There are plenty of parking spaces just across the road from QT.
