Steps from sandy Plaka Beach, boutique hotel Naxian on the Beach is an all-suite grown-ups only getaway. Leisurely breakfasts can be enjoyed on your suite’s private balcony, a pair of seaside sunloungers are reserved just for you and the biggest decision you’ll face will be whether to go for the indoor or alfresco spa tub (every suite has one or the other). There’s a bar by the shoreline, a mod-Greek restaurant and a wicker-lined bar with 120 varietals of Greek wine. Permanently swimsuit clad is the way forward here (at least when fellow guests are around)…

Our favourite rooms

Each of the suites has a large sea-view balcony – those on the first floor have a hammock – and either an indoor or an outdoor spa bath tub. We prefer the cheeky alfresco option, of course.

Poolside

There’s no pool, but you’re encouraged to dip your feet in the sea – it’s only a few steps away, after all. Plus, every suite has a private hot tub…

Hotel restaurant

Beach-shack-style Tortuga has long wooden pine tables, with wooden flooring and hanging wicker-shaded pendant lights; it’s open on all sides to cooling sea breezes and serves fresh mod-Greek fare. Choose from local pastas, decadent burgers, lobster and seasonal Greek salads. Beachfront favourites include the tuna ceviche tacos and the sea bream carpaccio. Pro tip: save room for the delicate olive-oil-drizzled baklava. Rise and shine to Olympian-worthy breakfasts of home-baked pies and breads, fresh fruit, local honey and cheeses, Greek yoghurt and freshly-squeezed orange juice. Tortuga’s a local favourite and the only spot on the property that makes an exception to the kids-free rule.

Hotel bar

The main hotel bar is at one end of restaurant Tortuga; pull up a wicker-and-iron bar stool and order your tipple of choice. Beers, cocktails and spirits are available, but the star of the show is the regional wine list – do you best to suss out your favourite among the 120 Greek wines. The charming bar staff will help, of course. There’s also a beachfront cocktail bar that shakes up refreshing drinks throughout the day.

Breakfast is served from 8.30am to 10.30am; lunch, light bites and dinner run from 1pm to 11pm.

You’ll find the hotel on the southern tip of two-mile-long Plaka beach, on the southwest side of Naxos.

Planes

Naxos Island National Airport is 10 minutes away by car; most flights to the island route through Athens. Hotel transfers can be arranged for €30 each way for up to four guests.

Automobiles

Hiring a car’s the best way to explore the island – it’s difficult to get far on foot. The town of Naxos Chora is 20 minutes away by car, and the hotel has free onsite parking.

Other

Ferry services run between Naxos and most of the Cycladic islands, including Santorini, Crete, Kos, Skiathos and Mykonos; hotel transfers can be arranged for €30 each way for up to four guests.

Worth getting out of bed for

Naxian’s a laid-back boutique stay that’s all about the leisurely life, so there’s not much to do at the hotel, by design. But local adventures in biking, horse riding, hiking and watersports can be arranged for active guests on request (at an extra charge). Or, get out for a culture fix: explore the streets of Naxos Town, for instance, or take in the sunset views from the Venetian Castle and pick up modern Cycladic art at local gallery Fish & Olive.

You’ll have your pick of beaches. If you tire of the white-sugar sandy spot on your doorstep, meander down the coast to Orkos; there you’ll find a chain of secluded coves and quiet stretches of beach. Panormos is best for watersports; this wild spot is 54 kilometres from Naxos Town (on the southeast side of the island) and well off the beaten path. Rent paddle boards and small boats at the beach shack and set off to explore the coastline by sea, then take a break at Panormos’ beach bar for shoreside snacks of pitta and souvlaki. If you’ve reached your daily fill of saltwater, visit the nearby hillside village of Filoti and wander around its tree-shaded square. We’d recommend stopping at one of the cosy cafés for a strong cup of Greek coffee, or at a local tavern for a draught of ouzo. There’s also hilltop Portara, a marble doorway that’s the only remnant of an ancient temple dedicated to Apollo; you’ll feel immersed in Greek mythology and get built-in framing for that panoramic view over Naxos Town – it’s a win-win.

Local restaurants

Sip your morning coffee out of tea-party-ready cups at pretty brunch spot Melimilon, which is particularly proud of its decadent pancakes – chocolate- and fruit-topped affairs that’ll start your day with a sugar buzz. (Pick up a jar or two of the house-made fruit jam for the road.) Bright white café Scirocco has been a Naxos favourite since Mama Katerina opened the spot in 1995; it’s decked out in picnic-plaid tablecloths and serves up traditional Greek fare: octopus salads, pitta with tzatziki and salty xynomyzithra (the island’s variety of Greek soured cheese). We’d consider these dishes supplements for the impressively piled sharing platters, which are a beacon ‘for the indecisive’, or so says the menu. Alfresco eatery Meze 2 is open for seafood-centric lunches and dinners; the shrimp-laden pasta takes top billing at both.

Boutique hotel Naxian on the Beach is, as you might expect, right on the  Plaka beach: it’s a seaside stay that blends in with the golden sand, with chestnut-hued walls, natural wood furniture and wicker features throughout. After a laid-back check-in at the hotel’s mod-Greek restaurant Tortuga (there’s nothing as formal as a lobby here), settle into your sea-view suite and ditch your travel gear for your swimming togs. Then pad out onto the sunlounger-dotted beach and say cheers to the start of your holiday: a fruity cocktail from the hotel’s beachfront bar should do the trick, with the sound of the waves to wash away any residual cares. You’re a bohemian beach babe now: your toughest decision will be whether you have room for that final post-dinner bite of feathery-light baklava.
