Setting

Links by the lake

Modern cabin-style villas, world-class links and farm-fresh fare – these are just a few of our favourite things about Kinloch Manor & Villas on New Zealand’s North Island. Choose this greens-surrounded hotel on the edge of Lake Taupo for days spent perfecting your swing, hiking through geothermally active parks and paddling across the neighbouring lake… or just decamp to the spa for honey-based scrubs and facials, taste your way through the wine selection in the velvet-clad bar or soak in the scenery from your private terrace. However you spend your days, be sure to catch evening aperitifs and multi-course estate-to-plate dinners in the main lodge before succumbing to the siren call of your cosy cabin.

Worth getting out of bed for

Holidays in New Zealand err towards the outdoorsy. Hire mountain bikes and cycle around Lake Taupo on the Great Lake Trail, or hike the 19.4 km Tongariro Alpine Crossing for spectacular volcanic scenery; the popular day hike loops by active volcanoes, ice-cold mountain springs and jewel-toned lakes. Book a one-on-one session with a PGA pro at the golf club to practice your putting or follow an expert fishing guide and learn how to fly cast – the chef can serve up anything you catch that evening.

Local restaurants

Trendy Taupo café Storehouse serves up soul food brunches, organic juices and coffees. Choose from bubble and squeak on hashed baby potatoes; Hawaiian poke breakfast bowls with marinated salmon, crispy seaweed and avocado; huevos rancheros with chorizo and chipotle peppers; or fried-chicken waffles drizzled with maple syrup. For lunch, head to Victoria’s and order steak sandwiches with caramelised-fig and pear chutney, lamp-topped potato cake with beer-battered onion rings and shoestring fries with spicy aioli. Settle in for laid-back dinners at The Bistro: start with handmade truffle ravioli before mains of confit Cambridge duck leg or freshly caught Hawkes Bay fish. For dessert, there’s blood-orange and cranberry sorbet with mint and pomegranate molasses or decadent coconut cake with white chocolate, ginger and lemongrass ice cream. Book ahead for dinner at The Brantry, which serves modern New Zealand fare in a renovated 1950’s townhouse; ask for a table in the garden in warmer months. The menu changes with the season, but expect something along the lines of freshly caught local fish topped with artichoke cream, sprout salad and whipped feta or free-range pork belly with caramelised pear and Kumara puree. Chocolate lovers will want to save room for the tasting plate of mousse, ice cream, tart and crisp with crystallised orange and mint syrup.

Local bars

Sip on cocktails at Taupo’s Salt Bar or relax with alfresco drinks on the lakeside terrace at 2 Mile Bay Sailing Club. At the latter, you can watch the windsurfers, snack on wood-fired pizzas… or even hire rowboats if the whim strikes.
