Setting

Pearl on the peninsula

Ka Bru 1100 is a bijou boutique hotel set in a dazzling-white villa on Brazil’s Maraú peninsula. It’s strictly adults-only here, with just six romantic suites offering outlooks onto either the South Atlantic Ocean or the Cassange lagoon. Its semi-wild location lends itself to calm contemplation and no-frills nature walks, but a stay here has a decidedly sophisticated edge, courtesy of the simple yet chi-chi stylings, personalised service and passionate kitchen team bringing the fine-dining flair. Sandy Praia do Cassange beach is just a few steps away. It stretches on for miles and is practically empty, so you can indulge your castaway daydreams before returning to reassuringly comfy quarters a real castaway could only dream of.

At the hotel

Free WiFi, free-to-borrow beach bikes and stand-up paddle boards, beach bags, sun hats. In rooms: air-conditioning, minibar, free bottled water, Trussardi bed linens and bed towels, and handmade Ka Bru organic toiletries.

Our favourite rooms

We were tempted by the hotel’s ground-floor Master Suite for its extra space and VIP ocean-view sunloungers, but there’s some extra wow-factor up top in the Panorama Suite. It’s the only guest accommodation on this level and, as the name would suggest, offers panoramic views of the palm-sprinkled coastline from its spacious private terrace.

Poolside

The outdoor chlorinated swimming pool runs along the restaurant terrace and offers soothing views of the beach, palms and ocean beyond.

Bring cash. While your credit card will work fine at Ka Bru 1100, you’ll need cash for many local restaurants and bars if exploring the surrounding area, and there are no banks or cashpoints on the peninsula.

Anonymous review

Every hotel featured is visited personally by members of our team, given the Smith seal of approval, and then anonymously reviewed. As soon as our reviewers have returned from this cool, coastal hotel in Brazil, a full account of their blissed-out beach break will be with you. In the meantime, to whet your wanderlust, here's a quick peek inside Ka Bru 1100 in Bahia…

Some rusticisms are to be expected at Bahia stay Ka Bru 1100, due to its dreamy coastal location. You’ll have to go without mobile-phone signal throughout most of the peninsula (although you’ll have internet at the hotel), and many local businesses are cash-only, with no cash points or banks in easy reach. So check the weather, download driving maps if you need ‘em and pack your cash, and you’ll be all set to start your adventure. You’ll pull up outside a minimalist white block with solid wood doors, an airy lounge leading out to an enticing pool and dreamy beach, and six less-is-more guest rooms that leave the lagoon and ocean views to do the talking. This is a place that’s at capacity with just 12 guests, so you’ll find that service is very much a personalised affair. Hook your free beach bag over your shoulder, grab a lounger on the sands of this singularly tranquil stretch of beach…and relax.
