Style

Cool as ice

Setting

Two-step from Trinity Park

Revamped from a dry-ice factory and here to shine a different light on Fort Worth, Hotel Dryce is the Cultural District’s coolest kid. It’s set just down from Dickies Arena and opposite Trinity Park’s blooming Botanic Gardens, so you’re never far from the hub's happenings (rowdy rodeos and the Stockyard’s cattle drives are a few fan favorites). The rooms have a warm decor (courtesy of repurposed Oaxacan rugs and hand-crafted oak accents) contrasting with otherwise-concrete interiors. Downstairs, the bar fills with local music-lovers for vinyl nights and DJ sets, Palomas are poured by the fire pit and artwork commissioned by a nearby non-profit recalls Fort Worth’s roots.

Our favourite rooms

Each room has similar industrial-style interiors that pay homage to the building's past life, but we’d suggest opting for City View King Room 211 for its vast views down Montgomery Street and over Dickies Arena. Or, if it's extra space you’re seeking, go all out with the Dryce Suite for its dressed-in-blues living room.

The choice is yours – just be sure to leave enough space for a fresh pair of cowboy boots.

The hotel hosts a number of events throughout the week, including a vinyl night on Mondays – you’ll get 10 per cent off drinks if you bring your favorite record along.

United States

You’ll find Hotel Dryce in Fort Worth’s Cultural District, in North Central Texas.

Planes

Dallas Fort Worth International Airport is a 25-minute drive from the hotel, and most major US and European cities have direct flights (those that don’t will require a layover, often in New York City or Atlanta). The hotel doesn’t arrange private transfers, but there'll be plenty of taxis lined up at the airport.

Automobiles

You won’t need a car if you’re planning on staying in the city, but if you’d rather the freedom to explore the state’s outer edges, there are plenty of rental booths at the airport.

Worth getting out of bed for

Hotel Dryce is just outside the center of Fort Worth’s up-and-coming Cultural District, making it the ideal base to explore the city’s best spots. You’re in Texas, so the option to go full cowboy is always there, and the National Cowgirl Museum and Hall of Fame – set-up as an ode to the American West’s most influential women – is the best place to start, and there’s no harm in bagging a pair of cowboy boots at famed ML Leddy’s if you’re feeling inspired afterwards. Or, if you’d rather go full cowboy, head to the Trinity Trails for a horse-riding session. There’s always something going on down the road at Dickies Arena, whether it be concerts, rodeos or matches – it just depends on which day you pitch up.

For those wanting to skip the cowboy-themed traps, the Kimbell Art Museum, the Modern Art Museum of Fort Worth and the Amon Carter Museum of American Art are all a 20-minute walk away. Just over Clear Fork Trinity River, the Upper West Side has sought-after shopping streets, Sundance Square among them, or stay close by and head for the Montgomery Street Antique Mall. And if you’re seeking some slightly fresher air after all that urban wandering, the Botanic Gardens, Japanese Gardens and Trinity Park are just across the street from the hotel.

Local restaurants

There are plenty to pick from, but we’d suggest stopping by Clay Pigeon on White Settlement Road for freshly made seasonal fare served in a bistro-style setting. For classic Texan traditions, head to Heim Barbecue, where locally sourced meat is slowly flamed over an oak fire.

Local cafés

All-American breakfasts (we’re talking waffles and fried chicken) are served round-the-clock at Vickery Boulevard Cafè, an old-school diner on its namesake street.

Local bars

When the weather is warm, Birdie’s Social Club serves classic cocktails and light bar bites alfresco (it even hase a dedicated margarita truck).

As soon as our reviewers have returned from this revamped hotel in Texas and unpacked their beers and boots, a full account of their Western break will be with you. In the meantime, to whet your wanderlust, here's a quick peek inside Hotel Dryce in Fort Worth…

Fort Worth may be more commonly known as Cowtown, but Hotel Dryce owners Jonathan Morris and Allen Mederos are here to show more of its Funky Town moniker, with a space that seeks to recast the city’s old-school cowboy culture into something a little more true to its locals. Don’t get us wrong, there’s certainly plenty of Western wonders here (Dickies Arena is down the road for one), they’re just done in a slightly different way: artworks adorning Bar Dryce’s walls were all created by local artists of color and commissioned with the hotel by non-profit Art Tooth; oak furnishings that warm otherwise industrial-style rooms were designed and hand-built by Patrick Adams, who grew up just round the corner, and interior designer Sarah Pederson sourced discarded Oaxacan rugs and repurposed them into the curtains that drape the scene today. The city’s famed rodeos, cattle drives and barbecue-boasting restaurants are all within walking – or short driving – distance, but once you’ve retired to the hotel bar, Old Fashioned in hand, we’re pretty sure you’ll be glad to have a taste of a humbler, more authentic Fort Worth for the night.
