Setting

CDMX parks and recreation

A boutique hotel with a B&B set-up, Campos Polanco is so much more than a launchpad for exploring its lively namesake district. Sultry, mid-century-inspired interiors get into bed with art deco architecture and provocative modern Mexicana, sparking tantalizing chemistry. Take it all in over a game of checkers by the courtyard’s foliage-festooned green wall, or upstairs for late-afternoon mezcal on the rooftop terrace, with sunset views over leafy Líbano Garden.

Our favourite rooms

Mid-century mavens will thrill to Campos Polanco’s lavish decor, from the monochrome mosaics in your ensuite, to the colorful button-down fabrics and well-turned wooden furnishings. Campos Residence suites are in a league all of their own: the spacious lounge reveals expansive views of leafy Líbano Garden through bi-fold balcony doors; a marble-topped kitchen invites culinary showmanship, and the bathroom’s double rainfall shower (and separate standalone tub) mean no one needs queue for morning ablutions.

Spa

In-room massage and facial treatments can be arranged on request.

Packing tips

Because this isn’t a neighborhood where you want to stint on glamor, bring all your smartest threads, and ensure any workout gear’s suitably designer, too. A spare case to cram full of treasures from Avenida Presidente Masaryk’s boutiques won’t go amiss either.

Also

On the fourth floor of Campos Polanco, the bright, airy gym doubles as a yoga room, with peaceful views across the leafy neighborhood, and a narrow balcony for cooling off, post workout.

Pet‐friendly

The promise of epic walkies in Polanco’s vast public parks is all but guaranteed to set doggo tails a-wagging. There’s space for up to two pets (under 25 kilos) in all room types; a one-off fee of US$75 plus tax applies for each. See more pet-friendly hotels in Mexico City.

Children

Little Smiths are welcome, and under-14s charged as children. There are green spaces nearby where kids can run off steam, but its upscale locale feels more oriented towards adults, and there are no specific facilities for Little Smiths at the hotel.

Mexico

Campos Polanco is a glittering art deco jewel in the Polanco neighborhood, Mexico City’s affluent answer to Beverly Hills. Expect lush parks, leafy boulevards, ritzy restaurants, and designer boutiques.

Planes

Mexico City International Airport is 30 minutes to an hour from Campos Polanco, depending on traffic and time of day. Transfers are available for US$125 one-way with the hotel’s house car, a luxury eight-seater SUV, with round-trips costing US$200 plus tax. Cab transfers can also be arranged when the house car is unavailable.

Trains

The closest metro station is Auditorio, which is walkable in 15 minutes – but public transport can be challenging, and a better option is to travel by car.

Automobiles

The hotel’s house car offers free drop-offs within a three-mile radius, when available. Otherwise, taxis are the simplest way to get around the city, but stick to online service providers to avoid being ripped off.

Worth getting out of bed for

If Campos Polanco’s arresting art collection has whet your appetite for vibrant visual stimuli, you’re in luck: Polanco just happens to be home to Mexico’s finest art galleries and museums. We’re talking Museo Soumaya, an utterly incongruous aluminum-clad building with a no-less-extraordinary collection that features notable pieces by Dali, Rodin and Picasso. Its near neighbor, Museo Jumex, a similarly eye-catching Modernist cube with a distinctive jagged roof, is home to works by Warhol, Duchamp and Hirst, as well as an awe-inspiring collection of Latin-American art. The work of legendary Mexican muralist David Alfaro Siqueiros is celebrated at the Sala de Arte Publico Siqueiros, while those who like their architecture, erm, kaleidoscopic, will find much to enjoy in the colorful courtyards at Casa Luis Barragán.

It almost goes without saying that you can’t stay in Polanco without being drawn moth-like to Mexico’s most luxurious shopping street, Avenida Presidente Masaryk. Gucci, Louis Vuitton, Cartier and Porsche are just a few of the high-end retailers vying for your peso(s) along this million-dollar drag. Post-spree decompression opportunities abound in the neighborhood’s many excellent parks. Grab an iced coffee for a gentle meander around Líbano Garden directly opposite the hotel; check out the weekly farmers’ market and peaceful reflecting pools in nearby Lincoln Park, or don comfy loafers to explore the 17,000(!) acres of the Bosque de Chapultepec, CDMX’s great green lung, which comes complete with a hilltop palace, a zoo, a boating lake and two museums.

Local restaurants

Pujol is the flagship restaurant of Mexican wonder-chef Enrique Olvera, whose fusion tasting menu and umami signature mole sauce tell you everything you’ll ever need to know about what made him a household name. Quintonil’s earthier approach is no less imaginative, with a thoroughly modern menu of Mexican dishes that includes stone crab in pipian verde, and a cactus-paddle sorbet. Book either of these well in advance: your social media feeds will thank you (even if your bank balance doesn’t).

Local cafés

Late tequila nights are best followed by strong coffee and plenty of fresh air. Grab your favorite morning brew (ideally with a giant slab of frosted cheesecake) at nearby purveyors of the good stuff, including Boicot and Niddo Café Polanco, then dip into peaceful Lincoln Park for full recovery.

Local bars

Inviting cocktail bars abound in prestigious Polanco. Case in point: Limantour is a split-level joint that woos the local in-crowd with a buzzy atmosphere and regional takes on classic concoctions (the signature Machete and Mezcal Stalk cocktails pack a particularly potent Mexican mezcal punch). Over the other side of the Bosque de Chapultepec, trendy Gin Gin Polanco serves joyous riffs on juniper, from a refreshing Bramble to the spicy ginger kick of their Gin Gin Mule.

Every hotel featured is visited personally by members of our team, given the Smith seal of approval, and then anonymously reviewed. As soon as our reviewers have returned from this art deco diamond in upscale Polanco and unpacked the contents of their brand-new Gucci luggage, a full account of their luxury boutique break will be with you. In the meantime, to whet your wanderlust, here's a quick peek inside Campos Polanco in Mexico City…

The great big golden front door hints at the luxury within: if you’re opening a hotel in polished Polanco – a wealthy CDMX enclave that’s home to some of the country’s leafiest parks and most exclusive bars, boutiques and galleries – you’ll need a refined residence that can hold its own. Cue, Campos Polanco, an art deco address with bags of ritz throughout its salons, suites and residences. All the most glamorous and cosseting elements of mid-century design have been deployed, and brought bang up to date with playful, modern Mexican art, alongside grand statement pieces such as the swirling central staircase studded with huge lanterns. Sleek salons and a wraparound rooftop terrace make quite the statement, too: Campos Polanco may not have a restaurant (and, in this lively district, has no need of one), but it compensates with an abundance of social spaces. Something of a home away from home then, albeit one that’s (probably) a bit grander than your own.
